Matt Forte: Angry Tweet a Sign of Dark Road Ahead for Bears and Star RB

Jun 6, 2018

The Chicago Bears added yet another weapon to their offense on Thursday, agreeing to terms for former Oakland Raiders running back Michael Bush.

As reported by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Bears are getting Bush for four years at $14 million, $7 million of which is guaranteed. Considering the fact Bush is good enough to be a No. 1 running back, this is a steal for the Bears.

And yes, it gives the Bears insurance in case they can't get Matt Forte signed to an extension. The Bears are set even if Forte decides to hold out, which is something he has considered, according to National Football Post.

Forte apparently realizes what's going on, and he's not happy about it. Here's what he tweeted on Thursday:

"

There's only so many times a man that has done everything he's been asked to do can be disrespected! Guess the GOOD GUYS do finish last....

— Matt Forte (@MattForte22) March 22, 2012"

It would have been much nicer of Forte to welcome his new running mate to the Windy City, but nope. He's putting his foot down.

Mark these words: this will not end well.

The Bears had to know something like this could have been coming once Bush's signature was on the dotted line. They did what they had to do in going out and getting Bush, but they would have been kidding themselves if they had expected Forte to respond to the news with a shrug and a "Whatever, dude."

It's easy to see where Forte is coming from. Before the Bush signing, there was at least a chance he'd be able to get a coveted extension from the Bears, even if he had to hold out for it. Now, the Bears don't have nearly as much incentive to offer him a lucrative extension. If Forte doesn't want to play ball with them, oh well.

They just signed an above-average running back to a four-year deal.

So the Bears did what they had to do, and Forte said what he had to say. Now the question is whether there's any way the two sides can mend things between them.

The way things are looking now, that ship has already sailed.

The Bears have made it pretty clear that they don't value loyalty nearly as much as Forte values it. They're going to make the best business decisions they can make, and after signing Bush that means they're only going to extend Forte if they can extend him at a price befitting a running back who is now more of a co-star.

Forte doesn't have to like it, and he doesn't have to put up with it. The best thing he can do now is play out the season and then depart from Chicago via free agency in 2013. His franchise tender will pay him close to $8 million this season, and Forte could easily get money like that as an unrestricted free agent, provided he stays healthy in 2012, of course.

We'll see how Forte chooses to play this situation. But for now, the pieces are in place for him to make a bitter exit from Chicago.
