The New York Knicks are a desperate team.

They've severely underachieved to this point of the season and have an 8-13 record to show for it.

Perhaps the only way the Knicks can get back into the Eastern Conference race is to shake up the roster and make some changes.

New York has been linked to a lot of different players lately that may help reverse their fortunes.

Here's a look at the latest news on potential moves that may help the Knicks get out of their funk.

Dwight Howard

Stephen A. Smith reported that the Knicks and the Orlando Magic have had conversations about a blockbuster trade that would send Amar'e Stoudemire and Tyson Chandler to Orlando in exchange for Dwight Howard.

Knicks fans shouldn't get overly excited about this rumor.

For one, the Knicks don't make this deal without Howard signing an extension with them, and to date, he's given no indication that he would even entertain the thought.

Then, there's also the fact that the Knicks can't trade Chandler until March 1, so there's no point getting excited about this unless the two clubs begin talking around the All-Star break.

Amar'e Stoudemire to Philadelphia

Stoudemire's name popped up in a rumor connected to the Philadelphia 76ers late last week, according to CSN Philly.

Stoudemire's numbers are way down, and there could be some truth to the Knicks shopping him, as this would be the third rumor he's been involved in this season if you count the Chris Paul talk from the preseason and the latest talk surrounding Howard.

Though some Knicks fans may want the club to make a move involving Stoudemire, I wouldn't get too excited about this possibility, either.

For one, the Knicks would be foolish to trade him inside the division unless Philadelphia seriously overpaid.

There's also the fact that Sixers president Rod Thorn denied the rumors.

Of course, what else is he going to say at this point? But, this rumor really has no legs.

Steve Nash

The Knicks inquired about the availability of the two-time MVP last summer, and while his name has seemed to pop up a lot lately, there's no chance the Knicks could pull off a deal to bring in Nash.

However, there is a possibility that the Knicks could target Nash as a free agent next season, but that does nothing to help them now.

Kenyon Martin

Martin is a possibility, as he's expected to make up his mind this week.

The Knicks are definitely one of the teams on his radar, along with the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs and Atlanta Hawks .

New York is still in the running and they, along with the Clippers, can offer their full mini mid-level $2.5 million to Martin.

The Clippers may seem like the more attractive option right now because they are winning, but don't count the Knicks out of the sweepstakes just yet.

J.R. Smith

The Knicks need guard play badly and have been linked to Smith, who can sign with an NBA team when his Chinese team finishes their season.

He would be an intriguing option and has shown interest through Twitter, even recently tweeting "I wonder what it's like to play on Broadway."

I wouldn't read much into that at all, but Howard Beck reported that the Knicks have more interest in Smith then they do in Martin.

Nothing is imminent, but if they could get Smith for their $2.5 mini mid-level exemption, they probably will take a chance on him.

Although NBA.com reporter Adam Zagoria added that according to Smith's father, the Knicks aren't a likely destination for him.

Ramon Sessions

Sessions was linked to the Knicks as early as today by Marc Berman.

They aren't the only team after him, so it's doubtful they would have a chance at him, but it's worth keeping an eye on.

The Knicks recently picked up the option of Toney Douglas, who the Cavaliers could have interest in.

Sessions would be an upgrade for the Knicks at the point guard spot, so it's something they may be wise to pursue.

Wilson Chandler

It would certainly be nice to see Chandler back in a Knicks uniform when he returns from China, and while they checked into him like almost every other team, Denver's not letting him go anywhere.

He's a restricted free agent, and the Nuggets still have his Bird Rights. Denver will be foolish to allow him to go to another team.

Baron Davis

I only include Davis on this list because once the Knicks get him in the lineup, it should have the feeling of making a major move.

That's how badly they need a point guard and ball movement.

When will we see Davis debut in a Knicks uniform?

Who knows, but the latest report from the Associated Press has Davis out at least another week minimum.

With the Knicks facing a tough stretch of three games in three days, it would have been nice to have Davis in the lineup by now.

Mike D'Antoni

With the Knicks struggling big time, it's easy to point the finger at D'Antoni and think a coaching change is on the horizon.

While there is no doubt D'Antoni is on the hot seat, a coaching change doesn't seem on the horizon at this point.

His players, including Carmelo Anthony before the Pistons game, have come to his defense and are behind him 100 percent.

Anyone thinking a coaching change is the answer will be severely disappointed. It's not going to happen.

Phil Jackson

Here's one that's not happening. Period.

For one, the Knicks aren't firing D'Antoni, and secondly, Jackson isn't taking a coaching job in the middle of the season, although it's an intriguing proposition and one worth keeping an eye on.

Jackson has been quoted a lot lately about coaching and about the Knicks and has left things open for interpretation.

Berman also reports that Jackson very well could be the Knicks coach next season, but there is no way he's on the Knicks sidelines this season.
