UFC 141 Results: 4 Reasons We're Not Sold on Alistair Overeem Just Yet
After competing in 47 MMA fights, winning titles in multiple organizations and going through some pre-fight mishaps, Alistair Overeem finally made his UFC debut last night at UFC 141.
Overeem defeated Brock Lesnar with seemingly little effort and sent the former UFC champion into retirement.
With the win, Overeem is now the No. 1 contender for Junior dos Santos' heavyweight title.
Over the years Overeem has had many critics.
Even after last night's fight, he may not have shut everyone up.
Let's take a look at why some are still not sold on Overeem.
He Did Not Face the Best Brock Lesnar
1 of 4No one should discredit what Overeem did last night.
He finally picked up a much needed win over a top 10 heavyweight.
But let's face it. Although Brock Lesnar had a lot of hype coming into this fight and he is a former UFC champion, he has simply not been the same since he was diagnosed with diverticulitis.
Although Lesnar cut Overeem with a strike, he posed little to no threat to the former Strikeforce champ.
Overeem is a great striker, but he really did not have to do much against a man that looked like a shell of his former self.
Lesnar Aside, He Still Has Not Faced a Tough Top Heavyweight
2 of 4It's hard to discredit Overeem for not fighting guys when he wasn't signed to the UFC.
But Overeem was not even fighting the top fighters that Strikeforce had to offer.
The biggest name Overeem has in his current unbeaten streak besides Lesnar was Mirko Cro Cop in a bout that ended in a no-contest.
In his Strikeforce career, Overeem fought former UFC title contender Paul Buentello, Brett Rodgers who was coming off of a lost and Fabricio Werdum in a lackluster fight.
Overeem is not the first fighter to have critics for facing lesser competition.
But until he picks up a meaningful win against another prime heavyweight, he will have question marks surrounding him.
He Still Has Some Baggage Surrounding Him
3 of 4There were rumors that Overeem was almost pulled from the fight with Lesnar because of a licencing issue.
For years people have questioned whether or not Overeem has ever taken a banned substance despite the fact that he's never failed a drug test.
Overeem's fight purse was also being upheld by the Nevada State Athletic Commission because a former management group is currently suing him.
Although this may seem minor, if Overeem has drug test issues or has to deal with money issues outside of the Octagon, it could distract him and be the downfall of his UFC career.
He Has Struggled with Top Strikers in the Past
4 of 4Since moving to heavyweight full time, Overeem has looked like a completely different fighter than he was at light heavyweight.
At light heavyweight Overeem faced top strikers like Chuck Liddell, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.
Although Overeem had some success, when it came to the top guys, Overeem fell short.
Yes Overeem has K-1 striking ability and held titles in other organizations. But until he defeats a fighter like Junior dos Santos, many will still have doubts.
