Los Angeles Clippers: Did Clippers Give Up Too Much for Chris Paul?

Christopher KeshishianDec 14, 2011

Chris Paul is officially in Los Angeles now...unless David Stern decides to play a part in the deal again.

It seems the original deal has been accepted, and the Clippers are sending Eric Gordon, Al Farouq Aminu, Chris Kaman and Minnesota's first-round pick to the New Orleans Hornets in exchange for Chris Paul.

Right off the bat it's clear that the Clippers lost way too much in this trade. Yes, they got an All-Star point guard in return, but they lost a player who I think is going to be an All-Star this year in Eric Gordon, an expiring contract which could have been used in another trade in Kaman, a talented but raw sophomore in Aminu and a potential first overall pick in the Minnesota pick.

May I add that this draft is one of the most talented of the decade?

That is way too much for a point guard who's dealing with serious injury problems with one of his knees. It's the same problem that All-Star shooting guard Brandon Roy succumbed to and retired because of a week ago. Paul has the same condition, except only in one knee. He's halfway there already.

Eric Gordon was really coming into his own this season. He was the leading scorer for the Clippers and their go-to guy in the clutch.

Kaman's contract was also a huge trade asset that they could have used in another trade to maybe bring in a high-caliber small forward which is a more glaring need as of now. Sure they signed Caron Butler, but he's getting old and coming off a major surgery.

Aminu was also a good young player. He showed a real nice touch on his jump shot in his rookie year and was a very athletic and long forward that could have helped the Clippers.

Paul is what he is. He's a passer who doesn't look to really score all the time. His numbers have been underwhelming over the last two years due to his injuries, and he posted low stats for a player that is thought to be the top point guard in the league.

Just like I said about the Lakers "acquiring" him before, the Clippers made a mistake that I think was the wrong way to go in the long run.

Who knows, maybe David Stern will fly in to save the Clippers like he did to the Lakers
