TNA Wrestling: Making John Morrison the Face of the X-Division Is a Mistake
As the talented World Wrestling Entertainment wrestler John Morrison wraps up his contract with the company, the inevitable talk of him—along with on-and-off girlfriend Melina Perez—heading to TNA Wrestling has been heating up.
PWinsider has reported that TNA has interest in bringing both Morrison and Perez in, making Morrison the top babyface in the X-Division and having a program with current X-Division champion Austin Aries.
This does make sense in some ways. Morrison would probably bring the most star power to the X-Division since the AJ Styles, Samoa Joe and Christopher Daniels heyday. However, I think this would also be a killer for Morrison's TNA career before it really gets started.
There's a couple of reasons for this, but the biggest may be Aries himself.
Anyone that has watched Austin Aries knows that he is a triple threat—he can talk, he can wrestle and, while he isn't the biggest wrestler, he has made a point to give himself a unique look.
Morrison, on the other hand, has an entertaining high-flying style and a unique look, but has a definite weakness as far as his microphone skills are concerned.
If you put Aries and Morrison in a feud that requires promos, and Aries is going to dominate. With that, there is also a pretty good chance the fans turn on Morrison and side with Aries, which wouldn't be a good start to Morrison's TNA career.
Another factor to consider is Perez
If paired with Perez, the chance of the fans turning on Morrison becomes greater when you consider how she is typically received by a lot of fans.
The answer to this is simple. Morrison needs to come in as a heel and be paired with Perez.
Considering the reputations both have earned—between Morrison being called out by Trish Stratus for his coldness towards her at this year's WrestleMania, and Perez's reputation of having an out-of-control ego—it wouldn't be hard for the duo to draw heat.
Bringing Morrison and Perez in as the most controversial couple in wrestling—which is true now that New Jack and Terri Runnels are done—has a lot of potential. The two could come out with the attitude that they are stars, should be treated as stars and be completely unapologetic about their history and actions.
However, this does beg one question. If Morrison becomes top heel in the X Division, what happens to Aries?
Hopefully, by then, you can move him up to TV Champion status. Aries would take a TV star/champion gimmick and hit it out of the park.
