In the NFL, having a big-time quarterback on the roster means everything, as you're often in the conversation for Super Bowl contention. It’s not unusual for a quality signal-caller to be the highest-paid player on the roster.

Peyton Manning and Tom Brady have been the main spokesmen of the NFL for the last decade, but each are in the twilight of their career. For the first time, the league has expanded their search for a new voice to other positional players.

So, who will be the next highest-paid player in the NFL?

Sam Bradford, St. Louis Rams

Sam Bradford is a good athlete that has a knack for making plays at the right moment. Last season, he was 12th in the NFL with more than 3,500 yards passing, as Bradford has shown the arm strength and scrambling ability to escape trouble and throw deep downfield.

The only knock against him is his ability to consistently stay on the field.

Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers

It’s a long shot to happen, but what’s not to like about Cam Newton? He is young and his quarterbacking skills have gotten better each week this season. Remember, Newton was handed the keys to the Panthers' offense without any offseason workouts, yet he is on pace to break all rookie passing records.

Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings

Easily, Adrian Peterson is one of the best offensive weapons in the NFL, as he is the focal point of the Minnesota Vikings' offense.

In his first four seasons, Peterson has averaged over 1,400 rushing yards per year and has been named to the Pro Bowl and All-Pro team after each season.

No doubt that he could display his running skills and on-field intelligence for many years to come. Peterson has an outside shot to become the best running back to ever play in the NFL.

Calvin Johnson, Detroit Lions

Calvin Johnson might get his wish soon: a new contract. His current deal expires after the 2012 season, and the Detroit Lions cannot afford to have a disgruntled star during their quest for league supremacy.

It’s hard to argue that Johnson isn’t deserving of a new contract, as opposing coaches feel he is the most versatile, dangerous receiver in the league today. His teammates chime about his work ethic, thus making Johnson the classic elite player you want on your side.

Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers

If there is a player worth a mega-contract, then it would be Aaron Rodgers. He is certainly surrounded with the talent to make plays, but the NFL is a league where the quarterback mistakes are magnified, and Rodgers rarely makes a bad decision.

He is younger and healthier than Manning, more valuable to his team than Brady and plays his position better than anyone else. Also, Rodgers has the right personality that any club would want as their face for the next decade.

That’s why he deserves to be the highest-paid player in the NFL.
