UFC on Fox: How Long Until Cain Velasquez Gets His Rematch?

Kyle SymesNov 12, 2011

Cain Velasquez entered the UFC Octagon Saturday night as an unbeatable champion with no glaring weaknesses. He left without the heavyweight title and now must begin the road back to the top.

After little more than a minute in his first fight in over a year, Velasquez found himself being crushed by a huge right hand from the new champion, Junior dos Santos. Most of the talk following the bout will be about dos Santos and rightfully so, but when and how does Velasquez get another shot at the title?

Patience will be a virtue for the former champion. Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem are set to square off on Dec. 30 to decide the No. 1 contender.

Dos Santos isn't likely to fight to the winner of that bout until at least March which gives Velasquez 3-4 months to work on his standing in the division.

As far as matchups go, there are a number of possibilities for Velasquez. If Frank Mir can get past Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, the two could meet for a potential title shot.

Not many fans and analysts would pick Mir in the fight but it would be the fight that makes the most sense as far as rankings are concerned.

Recently, Cheick Kongo has come out against Velasquez and has been making his case for a rematch. Kongo claims Velasquez was "lucky" and that he did not have adequate time to prepare for the fight.

Although Kongo isn't necessarily considered a top contender, he has won three out of his last four fights. He also exposed some of the weaknesses in Velasquez's striking defense in their matchup.

Kongo dropped Velasquez numerous times in their bout but the wrestling of Velasquez allowed to him to grind out a decision win.

The fight against Kongo makes the most sense for Velasquez. A matchup against Mir may give the former champ a win over a higher ranked opponent, but is there anyone who thinks Mir could withstand Velasquez's incredible pace on the feet or on the ground?

Fighting Kongo allows Velasquez to prove there was no "luck" involved with his win and gives fans the opportunity to see if he's worked on his weaknesses.

It also gives Velasquez an "easier" bounce-back fight. With Dana White coming down hard on Velasquez in the post fight talk, the UFC needs to rebuild him up again.

Velasquez's image isn't completely
