Penn State Scandal: Students Have Right Idea Supporting Joe Paterno

T.J. McaloonNov 9, 2011

It’s amazing how the students of Penn State can see through the mob mentality that is forming around Joe Paterno to see him resign and use their voices to lend their support of Paterno.

The several hundred students who flooded the coach’s house formed by using the social media outlets in Facebook and Twitter.

As Stefano Dipetro, a student who was at the rally at Paterno’s house, told ESPN.com, “From there, I just tried to relay it to as many people as possible on text, Facebook, Twitter, whatever," said DiPietro, an 18-year-old freshman. "None of us want to see Joe leave. We all love Joe."

Students who received a tweet like this one, were urged to spread the word like if someone was throwing a huge party.

The students who showed up must have been a breath of fresh air for the coach, as they started to be the dominant voice coming from his home. The media was doing their best to get at Paterno, looking for that one huge quote about the story. But, because of the kids, it finally gave something the coach could smile about.

Before the kids voiced their opinions for Paterno, the press was so demanding of the coach that it brought him to tears.

The students know what happened in the past was horrible. They know that the alleged actions from Jerry Sandusky, should be punished to the full extent of the law, if he is found guilty of said accusations.

They also know that the actions of one person does not represent their university as a whole. The school they either go to now, or used to go to, is still that prestigious business school they got their diploma from. Or it’s the school where they met their future husband or wife.

When the students of the university now were taking their visits to Penn State they saw the statues of Paterno on the campus and his name on the library. Joe Pa’s name is synonymous with Penn State, and the students know that one scandal will not erase all the good will that the coach has done in the past.

If you want to hear how much the students support Paterno, then watch the Penn State game against Nebraska on Saturday at noon.

I’m going to go out and say that the 110,000 screaming fans all in white will give Paterno an ovation that will bring the coach to tears.

And it all started by one student sending out one tweet or Facebook post. They say that one voice doesn’t matter. Well, they are wrong, sometimes all it takes is one voice.
