Missouri SEC: News on Tigers' Potential Conference Move Won't Come Until Friday

Wes ODonnellOct 20, 2011

The Missouri Tigers have been the center of rumor for some time now in regards to SEC expansion.

Texas A&M is already moving and a number of folks expect Missouri to make a similar announcement.

There has been no public statement that a move would be to the SEC, but no other conference would make sense.

A report from College Football Talk says that there will be no announcement on their intentions until at least Friday:

"The chairman of MU’s board told the Kansas City Star Wednesday that Friday is the earliest a notification, public and otherwise, would come."

Even then there is no guarantee that anything of importance will be said.

A previous report from CFT cited sources stating that Missouri believes they would get the necessary votes to join the SEC if that is what they wanted to do:

"

"The source said the Mizzou is confident they have the votes necessary to gain entry into the SEC; nine of the schools are required to give a thumbs up for membership."

"

It makes sense that Missouri would consider the move in the wake of Texas A&M's departure. The Tigers joined the Big 12 in 1996 and have never won a Big 12 title in football.

The SEC not only offers a fresh opportunity, but it also offers more money.

Rivals.com's Missouri site, PowerMizzou.com, goes even further, citing several reports that believe the Tigers will be playing in the SEC next year and even naming a possible replacement for them in the Big 12:

"

"Our source with knowledge of the television side of things said that executives are anticipating Missouri to play in the Southeastern Conference next year and that West Virginia would replace the Tigers in the Big 12. BYU and Louisville are also teams that have been mentioned for that spot. It is not out of the question the Big 12 could add all three, as the Kansas City Star reported earlier this week that the league would likely go back to 12 teams if Missouri were to leave."

"

All these developments point to one main point: the Tigers are getting ready to leave the Big 12.

Whether the announcement truly does come Friday or not; it is only a matter of time before it happens.
