Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins Launches Wrestling Company

Ryan DilbertOct 15, 2011

Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins fame has launched his own wrestling promotion, Resistance Pro.

While the frontman may not be an atypical representative of the wrestling world, he's actually a big fan. Corgan will work behind the scenes and act as a lightning rod for publicity.  He seems to at least marginally know what he's doing as he's hired some quality talent.

Colt Cabana, Harry Smith (David Hart Smith), the Briscoe Brothers, El Generico and death match veteran Necro Butcher have all been signed to Resistance Pro.

Resistance Pro helped get their name out by attending the Wizard World Comic Con in November.

The company kicks things off with their first event, Black Friday in Chicago on November 25.  They'll also hold a meet and greet after the show.

Will Billy Corgan succeed where countless other independent promoters have failed?  He seems to have the passion and we can assume he has some cash to play with.

He'll likely at least at the beginning draw a few casual or non-wrestling fans who are attracted solely by Corgan’s star power.  Perhaps they'll see Cabana and El Generico go at it and develop a taste for the sport.

If he doesn't insert himself into his own product too often and patiently lets it grow, Corgan's Resistance Pro may go from a novelty to a legitimate wrestling company.

Another musical act turned wrestling promoter, the Insane Clown Posse, has done reasonably well with Juggalo Championship Wrestling.   Resistance Pro should draw a vastly different crowd than JCW and time will tell what their product will look like.
