UFC 137 Fight Card: 3 Reasons Roy Nelson Will Be Fighting for His Job

0 of 3

Despite a decent career record of 16-5, Roy “Big Country” Nelson’s career is most likely on the line in his fight against Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipović at UFC 137.

Unless you’re one of the more hardcore MMA fans, you may not know that Nelson is a seasoned MMA veteran with a black belt in BJJ from Renzo Gracie.

While Nelson is a talented fighter, he hasn’t been great inside the UFC. With a loss he will more than likely be on his way out. Read on to find out why.

Roy Nelson’s UFC Record

1 of 3

Since fighting for the UFC, Nelson has gone 2-2. His two wins garnered “Knockout of the Night” honors and were very convincing.

When Nelson went up against Junior dos Santos he got pummeled for three rounds straight. While the amount of punishment he took was impressive, his fighting wasn’t.

Nelson needs another decisive win, perhaps another "Knock out of the Night" or "Fight of the Night," to stay in the UFC’s good graces for a while longer.

Mirko's Declining Career

2 of 3

The once great and highly feared fighter Mirko “Cro Cop” is sadly at the end of his career. He hasn’t quite looked himself since coming to the UFC.

A loss to a declining fighter won’t look good for Nelson. I’m not saying Cro Cop is awful, he’s just close to retirement. Losing to him wouldn’t make Nelson look any better in the eyes of Dana White or anyone at the UFC.

While it could be said that if Nelson were to lose, he'd be losing to a top tier opponent, we all know that it wouldn't exactly be the case, sad as that may be for all of us Cro Cop fans.

Dana White’s Criticism

3 of 3

After Nelson’s loss to Frank Mir, Dana White criticized Big Country for his lack of conditioning. Although Nelson claimed his poor conditioning was a result of the flu, it still turned off many fight fans as well as the president of the UFC.

The disappointing thing about Nelson is that he could be a really tremendous fighter. In fact, he is a really tremendous fighter. He just lacks discipline.

One of his big draws is that he is still a great competitor despite his appearance. With a little more discipline, Nelson could be a great fighter who doesn’t have the traditional fighter physique.

Hopefully he’ll come well prepared in his fight with Cro Cop.
