Tom Brady and Randy Moss: Pro Bowl No-Shows

The NFL season is officially over. Congrats to the Giants for their amazing late-season run and Super Bowl victory.

Unfortunately for NFL fans everywhere, the only thing left to look forward to is the 2008 Pro Bowl.

Ah yes, the Pro Bowl.  That's the game theoretically composed of rosters stuffed with only the NFL's best. Theoretically. Truth be told, it is not.

Every year, several of the NFL's best players turn down their invitations to participate in the all-star game. This year, to the surprise of absolutely no one, the best quarterback and wideout have both opted out of the meaningless scrimmage.

Brady and Moss—the dynamic Patriot duo that sparked a season that missed perfection by a hair.

And of course, when I say "hair," I mean a dropped pick by New England's sure-handed cornerback Asante Samuel.

I also mean a dumb decision by Belichick to go for it on fourth and 13 instead of kicking a field goal. I also mean an impossible dance by Eli Manning to escape three blitzing Pat defenders. I also mean that catch made more with helmet than hands.

You pick.

But I've made my point. The Pats were good. And they were so, much in part to the sterling play of both Brady and Moss.  However, when the AFC takes that first snap on February 10th, it will not be Brady under center.

As the AFC quarterback drops back, he will not throw a pass to Randy Moss.

Brady doesn't do Pro Bowls, despite being selected nearly every season. The headlines might say that Brady and Moss will miss the game because of lingering injuries, but I know the real reason.

It's somewhat obvious, I think. The fact that eight Patriots were selected tells a lot. Brady's reason for not participating in the game is both logical and simple.

Brady simply knows that there is no reason to risk injury in an exhibition game. Unlike most Pro Bowlers, Brady has no reason to live out fantasies of playing on an all-star team.

He doesn't need to imagine himself playing on a team made of nothing but all-star level players. He doesn't share the opinion that the all-star game is a chance to surround himself with all the best players. Brady plays on such a team all year.

For 19 games this year, Brady lined up behind a wall.  This wall consisted of five players. Three of these were selected to play in the Pro Bowl

Brady's receiving corps was represented on the original Pro Bowl roster. That rep was Randy Moss. Each level of Brady's top-five defense will be represented in the game.

Vince Wilfork from his D-line. Mike Vrabel from the linebacking crew and Asante Samuel from his secondary will work the game.

Tom Brady skips the game every year because he understands the stupidity of trading 16+ games that matter for one that doesn't. When viewing Tom's no-show in this light, it is impossible to accuse Brady of insulting his fans because it is obvious that he is merely respecting his teammates and his organization.

If you must make such anal remarks, please provide me with a little constructive criticism as to how I might improve. If you don't plan to give me advice, I'd appreciate your not making any more negative comments about my writing. Thanks.

your whole injury possibility is so far out there it's kind of funny. the chances of somebody getting injured in the pro bowl and it being there long enough to effect the next season is ridiculus. he should see that it is an honor to have the fans pick him to go to the pro bowl. also, moss is just being a baby because he lost the super bowl. they should both play and give the fans the respect they deserve

I like all the excuses as to why Brady didn't show up. What was his excuse for playing the last few years? It's because he didn't win the superbowl. Cry me a damn river. Maybe he's too busy getting a 3rd woman pregnant. Brady has no class the same way the Belichick and the Patriots have no class. What was the deal with Belichick running off of the field before the Superbowl was even over? Maybe he had to get back to the locker room to hide the tapes. I will never consider the Patriot's to be the "American Team."

actually the ball bounced both ways. you say the Pats lost by a "hair", yes they did, but don't forget the interception was really a bobble by Smith, and the Giants most likey would have scored on that drive as well. that's football, everyone likes to point out the "if only's", but the "if onlys" don't happen. you could say "if only" the Pats had put up more points, but they didn't.

as for Brady, though you make a good argument, I believe it is due to injury, a bruised ego. you could say "why play Brady when they've already secured a place in the play-offs?" In fact, why play any starters. If it's the Superbowl that really matters (and every player says it is) who really cares about a perfect season. as a fan I really don't.

The best team doesn't always win.

United States hockey team vs. Russia in the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, New York ring a bell?

How bout Boise State vs. Okalahoma in the Fiesta Bowl?

It was an upset. They happen.

But the Patriots were and are a much better team with loads more talent at almost every position. If they played ten times the Patriots would win 9!!!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to take anything away from the Giant's win, they played the perfect game. But don't think for a minute that they were the better team.

I think the last thing Brady wants to do right now is throw a football. He's either at Pebble Beach playing golf with his dad like he always does, or hanging out on a beach with Gisele. Either way, I don't feel bad for the guy.

HEY MASON YOU MUST BE IN PERFECTVILLE WITH THE COLOGNE QB THE PRETTY BOY WHO JUST SIMPLY HAD HIS ASS WHIPPED BY REAL FOOTBALL STARS. TO INFER THAT THE BELECHEAT TEAM IS FULL OF SUPER STARS IS LAUGHABLE...JUST GO BACK THRU THEIR BOWL PERFORMANCES AND LOOK AT THE SEASON AND POST SEASON STATS AND RANKING. THE ONLY REASON THESE TWO CLASSLESS CLOWNS...MOSS AND BRADY, ARE NOT GOING TO THE PRO BOWL, IS BECAUSE THEY ARE WHAT THEY ARE. ONE TRICK PONYS ON A MEDIA MADE DYNASTY TEAM THAT CHEATED TO WIN SUPER BOWLS.

WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE AND THE 2001 RING IS FORFEITED OR AWARDED TO THE RAMS AND BELECHEAT IS SUSPENDED FOR A YEAR,THEN YOU MAY COME OUT OF YOUR TRANCE LONG ENOUGH TO SEE THE JUSTICE DEPT BEGIN WHAT MAY BE , THE 2ND ROUND OF HEARINGS ON RIGGING GAMES BY THE OFFICIATING CREWS, AND THE 30 BILLION DOLLARS IN CONTRACTS THAT KRAFT NEGOCIATED FOR THE LEAGUE AND REFEREES...FOR THE SUM OF 3 RINGS WITH NO SUPER STARS AND TWO "STARS "WITH ONE YEAR WONDER STATS. ONLY AFTER YOU REALIZE THE MAGNITUDE OF THIS FRAUD WILL YOU UNDERSTAND WHY BIG MONEY CORRUPTS IN A BIG WAY, EVERYTHING IT TOUCHES. ONLY THEN WILL YOU UNDERSTAND THAT THE PATS COULD NOT WIN 23 OF 26 GAMES BY 3 PTS OVER THEIR SO CALLED DYNASTY RUN, WITH OUT THE BIG FIX GAME IN AND GAME OUT! FOR CLARIFICATION, THE FOLLOWING WORDS ARE SYNONOMOUS WITH : "THE TUCK RULE, THE TY LAW RULE, PHANTOM CALLS WITH NO PENALTIES, BLATANT INFRACTIONS CAUGHT ON TAPE, WITH NO FLAGS AND WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE LAST SUPER BOWL, A HANDS OFF POLICY WITH REGUARD TO TOM BRADY FOR THE LAST 7 YEARS! REFEREES CLEARLY HANDED THIS TEAM SEVERAL BIG GAMES THAT THEY SIMPLY COULD NOT HAVE WON ON THEIR OWN MERIT. THAT IS THE REASON THEY BROKE THE RULES REPEATEDLY AND THAT IS THE REASON WHY SO MANY TEAMS FILED COMPLAINTS AGAINST THE ORGANIZATION OVER THE LAST 7 YEARS, AND THAT IS THE REASON FOR JUSTICE SERVED AND PAINFUL EMBARRASSING REVELATIONS ABOUT A PUNK MUMBLING COACH, A GREED DRIVEN OWNER AND A LEAGUE AS DIRTY AS THE DAY IS LONG. MR GOODNALL DESTROYED EVIDENCE THAT COULD HAVE BEEN USED IN A CRIMINAL TRIAL OR INQUIRY..... FOR BACKING THE KRAFT CIRCUS, HE DESERVES JAIL TIME AND OR FINES AND SUSPENSION ALONG WITH BELECHEAT . MR KRAFT SHOULD BE BANNED FOR LIFE FROM ANY LEAGUE BUSINESS , NOT PERTAINING TO THE OPERATION OF HIS TEAM...AND ONLY HIS TEAM ! BETTER STILL THE LEAGUE SHOULD SUSPEND OPERATIONS IN FOXBORO AND DISOLVE THE FRANCHISE AND RENAME OR RELOCATE THE TEAM WITH NEW OWNERSHIP! THIS ACT WOULD SEND A MESSAGE AND RESTORE THE LOST INTEGRIETY OF THE NFL.

I understand your views and believe it or not I agree. I'm not so biased in my fanhood that I can't recognize truth when I see it. But know this: Roger Goodell's destroying of that evidence was in the NFL's best interest. He was just trying to protect the league from facing the same fate brought onto baseball by steroids. Nobody can watch a talented baseball player anymore without wondering about steroids. Goodell didn't want that for the NFL, and so he did what he thought was the best thing to do.

THE 75 YEAR HISTORY OF THE NFL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS ARE FULL OF ROSTERS OF STARS AT ALMOST EVERY POSITION ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL. THATS WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS. THOUGH IT IS A TEAM GAME....TO SUGGEST THAT YOU JUST NEED A NO NAME TEAM OF SAND LOT PLAYERS LIKE THE PATRIOTS TO BUILD A "LEGIT" DYNASTY IS ABSURD AND REALLY LAUGHABLE FROM EVERY ANGLE AND PERSPECTIVE.

IF ANY ONE DOUBTS THE VALIDITY OF THIS CLAIM , I CHALLANGE ANYONE TO REVIEW THE NUMBERS AND PLAYERS STATS OF THE FOLLOWING TEAMS WITH ONE OR MULTIPLE RINGS: 49ERS, DOLPHINS,STEELERS,BRONCOS,COLTS,REDSKINS,BEARS,PACKERS,CHIEFS,GIANTS AND THE VIKINGS AND BILLS WHO LOST IN 4 APPEARANCES!

ALL OF THE 4 RINGS TEAMS SMOKED THE RECORD BOOKS ON THEIR WAY TO THE HALL OF FAME....WITH OUT THE ASTERISK BY THE TEAM NAME , A TUCK RULE , ILLEGAL VIDEO CAMERA WORK,PHONY FLAGS,AND MEDIA SPIN! CASE CLOSED . DOGS LICK THEIR OWN STOOL AND ACTUALLY LIKE THE TASTE!THE PATS GOT EXACTLY WHAT THEY PLAYED FOR! NOT AS PERFECT AS THE PERCEPTION WOULD HAVE IT..NOW WAS IT!!! IF IT LOOKS LIKE SHIT AND SMELLS LIKE SHIT, IT IS WHAT IT IS....!!!!

YES JEREMY YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT...BUT HE WAS WRONG TO DO WHAT HE DID....WHEN THE GOVERNMENT COMES CALLING AND THE NFL FRONT OFFICE TELLS THEM TO "SEE US AFTER THE SUPER BOWL TO TALK"???? THATS BAD...REALLY BAD! THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT STIMULATED THE POWERS OF JUSTICE TO EXAMINE THIS MULTI BILLION DOLLAR BUSINESS OR "INDUSTRY" AS ROBERT KRAFT HAS CALLED IT!....AND WHY SO MUCH CONTROVERSY SURROUNDED THIS FOXBORO TEAM OVER THE LAST 7YRS.

JEREMY FOR THE RECORD, I AM A NATIVE NEW ENGLANDER AND WANTED TO SEE A WINNING FRANCHISE IN THIS AREA AND FOLLOWED THE PATS FOR YRS. BUT I NEVER THOUGHT FOR 1 MINUTE THAT THEY WOULD DO IT THIS WAY...SCREWING SO MANY WORHTY TEAMS OUT OF THEIR SHINING MOMENT,PUNKING OFF THE REST OF THE WORLD AND ACTUALLY THINKING THEY WERE INVINCIBLE WHILE THROWING HALL OF FAME COACHES, PLAYERS AND OTHER TEAMS UNDER THE BUS IN THE PROCESS! REMEMBER YOU KEEP THROWING FLAGS , EVENTUALLY THE BETTER TEAM BECOMES FRUSTRATED AND TANKS OR MAKES MISTAKES....EVEN IF THERE IS NO ACTUAL PENALTY. WHEN TOMMY TERRIFIC HAD A TROUBLE PUTTING IT TOGETHER THE REFS WERE RIGHT THERE TO KEEP THE DRIVE ALIVE.

FINALLY THE GIANTS ARRIVED TO PLAY SMASH MOUTH FOOTBALL FOR 60 MINUTES AGAINST THIS TEAM. FINALLY SOME ONE KNOCKED TOMMY ON HIS ASS THE WHOLE GAME.....THATS OLD SCHOOL FOOTBALL AND SOME THING TOMMY HASN'T SEEN IN 7 YEARS! THE REFS LET THEM PLAY! TOMMY DIDN'T LIKE IT, BELECHEAT DIDN'T LIKE IT AND LEFT EARLY(NO PUN INTENDED) AND KRAFT PULLED HIS PANTS UP WITH A SMILE ON HIS FACE WITH 2 MINUTES LEFT JUST LONG ENOUGH TO SEE EVERYTHING ABOUT HIS PATH TO PERFECTION IMPLODE INTO THE PERFECT UPSET!

Alright everybody, the pro-bowl is really just a fan appreciation thing. I'm really glad it's an optional thing for the players. In a game like this, I'd much rather watch the players that appreciate the fans anyway. I won't miss Mr Brady much myself.

Come on guys, don't pick on the fans... They voted Tom Brady into the Pro Bowl and they have the right to vote for who they want to see there.

Now, if you watch the game tonight you'll see how he thanks them.....

Is there a list somewhere of all of the uninjured players that "respected their teammates" enough to blow off the fans that voted them into this unimportant game that by the way, isn't free to get into. I paid to go to three of these games and had a great time at all of them.

I think the game should be optional for the players, but if they're voted in and they miss two or three of them they should not be included in the voting anymore.

Really? I think it is only a testament to Tom Brady's lack of character that he doesn't do pro-bowl's, even though his fans vote him in every year. Goes along with not going to his long time girlfriend who was pregnant with his SON, (they were only apart for a month before she realized she was pregnant) to stay with the Victoria Secret body. And, his lack of involvement since the wee boy was born.
By the way...the .the underwear model was at the superbowl when the Giants beat the patriots. How come there is no hoopla about that like there was about Jessica Simpson making Tony Romo lose?
Sports world is almost as bizarro as entertainment world isn't it? Hmmmmmmmm......

Tom Brady's an asshole. I don't care what his justification is. Not a good trhing to do to your fans.Maybe NE fans really are stupid if they keep voting him in year after year. But still what a jerk. It's like being invited to aparty, not showing up and not giving a reason and not addressing it. Rude and arrogant.

Dude that is stupid. The only reson that the Pats did not win the Super Bowl was because Tom Brady's ankle was still injured, yet the team failed to mention that. Which, may still be the reason Tom Brady did not go to the Pro Bowl.

This is clearly a very biased article. The Giants won fair and square and Brady had plenty of opportunities to put more points on the board. The pro bowl may be a meaningless game, but so were the last few regular season games where Belicheat played Brady in the face of potential injuries and damaging their super bowl chances. The Pats won every regular season game, but had far from a perfect season. They nearly lost to the Colts, Ravens, Eagles, and Giants during the regular season. If it wasn't for a questionable call or a missed field-goal they could have easily lost a few games. I don't see what the big deal surrounding 16-0 is. In baseball or basketball if a team goes on a 16 game winning streak, it's no big deal. The Pats clearly choked when push came to shove. Tom Brady had the best regular season of his career and that is all we can say. For a quarterback who normally doesn't even break 30 touchdowns a year to break 50 is miraculous. Lets see if he can do it again next year. Derek, you hit the nail right on the head. And as far as Brady and Moss not playing in the pro bowl is concerned, they are clearly sore losers, none of the Pats could even stay on the field to congratulate the Giants after the game!

Several Pats congradulated the Giants on the field.

Its a big deal in any sport to go on a 16 game winning streak, but in most sports 16 games is only 3-4 weeks. In football 16 games is the entire 4 month season.

I definitely didn't question whether the G-men won fair and square. I give all the credit to New York for a great game and a great season. Eli Manning really stepped up.

Why don't everyone just move on? Obviously the patriots are doing something right for the media and everybody else to talk more about them this season than the reigning superbowl champs colts. i look at it this way any givin Sunday. But i will say this NOBODY wants to play the patriots because they're one of those teams that you can't say is a guarented win. The 2007 records and privious year records speak for themselves.

I think Brady is quite wise too be cautious of playing in pro bowl. I think most people forget that it was a NE PATRIOT Robert Edwards in 1999 who suffered a career ending leg injury at pro bowl activities. It took him the best years of his career just to get himself back to a condition that teams would even bother looking at him. I cant blame any one for not playing in the game. Lets face it Brady and Moss were only 2 of many who decided not to play this year and there will be many more in years too come.

Tom Brady isn't crap. He isn't the golden child, and he isn't the best QB in modern NFL. Manning is....not Eli, Payton. TOm Brady got everything handed to him on a silver platter by refs and the commissioner of the NFL who might I add is long time friends with the Owner of the Pats. HMMMMMMM. The tuck rule was the most absurd ruling ever, and if you watch the Pats play, the amount of penalties they get away with is unreal. They will be the reason I stop watching the NFL.
