As every Bull fan would know, there are a lot of rumors swirling around Dwight Howard. One day he wants to be traded. The next he wants to stay in Orlando. It's the Carmelo Anthony saga all over again.
The Bulls have been connected to Howard for a couple reasons: assets to trade for him, Howard's potential interest, etc. However, I have yet to see a definitive report or a comment from someone in the Bulls organization stating interest.
It seems from discussions on other Bulls articles here on Bleacher Report and other sites, 50 percent of Bulls fans want Howard, 50 percent do not. The half that does want Howard all have the same argument, and we've all heard it: "Dwight is the perfect player to pair with Derrick Rose."
I respectfully disagree: Blake Griffin would be better alongside Derrick Rose than Dwight would.
Before I go any farther, let me say that a trade of Blake Griffin to the Bulls will not happen, ever. Blake is the face of the Clippers and will likely spend the majority of his prime there. And if the Clippers ever decide to trade him in the future, the Clippers won't accept an offer headlined by the oft-injured and always useless Carlos Boozer.
But since this article is 100% hypothetical, it's okay to pretend that Blake and Derrick team up together in a Bulls uniform.
Blake would fit in better with the Bulls than Dwight Howard or any other player in the league. In an offense run by Derrick Rose, the basis of every play will be speed. Blake Griffin is as good of a transition player as a big man could ever be.
Dwight Howard's game, on the other hand, is based on his size. He has always relied on his ability to outmuscle any other player, and is not a great transition player. As a result, Blake as a better transition player would be the better fit alongside Derrick Rose.
One of the Bulls' biggest weaknesses is the lack of a second go-to scorer. Blake Griffin would fit better alongside Derrick because he is a better scorer than Dwight Howard. Dwight has been in the league for seven years now, and averaged 22.9 points a game in 2010-11. Since he has been in the league for so long, there isn't much room for improvement there.
Blake, on the other hand, averaged 22.5 points per game this season. And this was his second year in the league, he missed his rookie year due to a knee injury. He has plenty of room to grow, and will be a much better scorer than Dwight for years to come.
Blake is also a much more explosive athlete than Dwight Howard. The best player to play alongside Rose has to be explosive like him, and Blake fits the bill to a tee. Just Google "Blake Griffin dunks" to see why. Plus, can you imagine a starting lineup with D-Rose and BG? That is a Sportscenter highlight waiting to happen.
Finally, age. Dwight Howard certainly is not an old guy at 25 years old. But since we are discussing the perfect player to fit alongside the 22-year-old Derrick Rose for the next 10 years, Howard is a little too old. Blake fits in much better as he is only 22 years old. Blake and Rose won't even reach their prime for another 2-3 years; can you imagine if they were on the same team at the time?
In conclusion, Blake Griffin is the best player the Bulls could possibly bring to play alongside Derrick Rose. His skill set and age just make him a more viable candidate than Dwight Howard. It's a shame that it will never happen. I can already see the dunks that Blake and Rose could treat us Bulls fans to on a nightly basis.
