Jon Jones: 5 Reasons He Will Be Next Fighter to Win a UFC Title in 2 Divisions

Tim McTiernanJun 7, 2018

That's right. You heard it here first.

Well. Probably not. It's probably the 50th time you've heard it.

But I'll be the 51st.

Jon Jones will be the heavyweight champion of the world at some point during his career.

Jones is young, growing, athletic, unorthodox, a strong wrestler, a good striker, and many many more things.

Jones grows by leaps and bounds with every fight. He has only three years of training under his belt.

And he is on top of the light heavyweight division in the toughest MMA organization in the world.

He's going to have plenty of time to win the heavyweight belt. Here's why.

He's Young and Growing

1 of 6

Most people already know this, but I'll say it again.

Jon Jones is only 24 years old.

At that age, he could easily still be growing at a rate that, eventually, he won't be able to make light heavyweight anymore.

And he walks around at about 240 pounds when he isn't in training camp, so clearly...

He Has the Frame to Support Heavyweight

At 6'4'', Jones is taller than Brock Lesnar, Cain Velasquez, Shane Carwin, Junior dos Santos, Frank Mir and Randy Couture, among many others.

With an 84.5 inch reach, Jones has a reach advantage over every fighter in the UFC, including the 6'11'', Stefan Struve.

He is definitely big enough to handle himself at heavyweight.

"It Would Be Cool"

Jon Jones has said that he thinks "it would be cool" to be the heavyweight champion of the world.

In fact, his entire quote is

"

"I think personally it would be cool to be considered a Heavyweight champion of the world. I think it doesn't get much better than that. But I'm totally fine with being the Light Heavyweight champion. I'm 23 and have lots of years to mature as an athlete and in my physique. I'm also getting smarter with the decisions I make. I have a really good nutritionist that's been helping me. Her name's Kelly Keegan. She's designing all my diets and all the fitness things I do. The type of workouts that I'm doing. She gives my girl friend consistent, new recipes and tricks on what can make me perform and look my best. That's making it a lot easier for me. My last two fights, the Bader fight and the Shogun fight, I felt extremely powerful. Against Shogun I competed at weigh-in, I was about 217 and had 5.25% body fat which is extremely low so yeah, everything is working out and I'm making it easier on myself."

"

Clearly he's got the heavyweight belt on his mind.

Another thing he's got on his mind is the fact that...

He Wants to Be Known as the GOAT

Many fighters go into the sport with the same lofty goal.

To be the greatest fighter of all time.

What better way to get closer to that goal than to be only the third fighter in UFC history to win titles in two different weight classes?

BJ Penn is known as the greatest lightweight of all time.

Randy Couture is known as one of the greatest fighters of all time.

Should Jon Jones win the heavyweight title, he could be known as the greatest of all time.

Although, you can put all this aside, and look at one major reason that he will someday win the heavyweight belt.

Because He's That Good

And getting better with every fight.

I'm sure some people are going to disagree. They're going to say he hasn't been tested yet or they're going to say that I'm jumping the gun.

That's fine, but I stand by this.

Jones has been training in MMA for a little over three years.

There are guys who have been training longer who get better with each fight, like Brian Stann.

Stann grows by leaps and bounds.

Jones is no different.

Jones will be the heavyweight champion someday.
