NFL Speculation: Mike Vrabel Could Offer New England Needed Veteran Leadership

Tony SantorsaJun 7, 2018

Several years from now, when New England Patriots fans look back at the dynasty years, one defensive player that may come to mind is Mike Vrabel, a stellar pass-rushing linebacker that was one of the team's leaders.

Vrabel may have been traded out of New England back in 2009, but his time as a Patriot certainly may not be over.

The Kansas City Chiefs outside linebacker is set to become a free agent, once the NFL lockout is lifted, of course.

Vrabel has definitely been a serviceable linebacker for the Chiefs, especially under former New England defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel, but his days in Kansas City are likely over—considering his age being 35 years old and that he's yet to participate in any of the Chiefs' player-organized practices.

Once free agency begins, Bill Belichick and the Patriots should definitely consider bringing back Vrabel for another run with the team.

Vrabel's stats may been down, as he recorded 48 tackles last season while playing in 14 games for the Chiefs, but the leadership that his possess is undeniable.

Taking a look at New England's outside linebacker corps, it's considerably thin and the production out of it last season wasn't so great. However, Belichick and the Patriots have faith in Jermaine Cunningham to develop into the team's best outside linebacker, who will enter his second year in the league—but opposite of Cunningham, the production has been average at best.

Tully Banta-Cain, Rob Ninkovich and Eric Moore are all serviceable linebackers that perform well in New England's defensive system, but struggled to put pressure on the quarterback last season tremendously.

Vrabel may not be a sack machine in 2011, but his experience, leadership and presence alone could do dividends for New England's young defensive unit.

The main traits that Vrabel possess is his leadership ability And an understanding of not only the game, but of New England's complex 3-4 defensive system—something that Belichick considers to be extremely valuable.

If Vrabel were to return to New England, he'd not only offer some quality production, as he may have a little bit left in the tank, but he'd become a player/coach—something that New England's young and promising defense needs badly.
