NBA Trade Scenarios: 5 Trades T-Wolves Can Make After Signing Ricky Rubio

Ethan NorofJun 2, 2011

With the news that Ricky Rubio has agreed to join the Minnesota Timberwolves next season, there are already reports out of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that Jonny Flynn will almost certainly be traded.

There's no doubt that some major moves could be on the horizon for the downtrodden franchise, as the team needs to turn it around in a hurry to convince their star, Kevin Love, to remain in town for the long-term.

All of the following potential deals were calculated using the ESPN NBA Trade Machine, ensuring that they'd work out financially for both clubs involved.

New Orleans Hornets

1 of 5

Minnesota Acquires: SF Trevor Ariza

New Orleans Acquires: PG Jonny Flynn, SF Martell Webster

Trevor Ariza has yet to find a home since his tenure with the Lakers came to a close, and he could very well be on the move once again in the offseason.

With the T-Wolves still desperately needing a capable shooting guard and already loaded at the wing position, Ariza could immediately provide help to a team that could really use his services.

He wouldn't be expected to be one of the primary options in the offensive set, which would help to take the pressure off of him defensively and could enjoy similar success that he saw during his time in Los Angeles.

Portland Trail Blazers

Minnesota Acquires: SG Rudy Fernandez, SF Luke Babbitt, $1.079 million trade exception (Jerryd Bayless)

Portland Acquires: PG Jonny Flynn, SG Wayne Ellington

Although Ellington finally got some legitimate burn in the rotation under Kurt Rambis last season, he hasn't really come close to proving his worth as a first round draft pick.

Fernandez has waffled quite a bit regarding his desire to stay in Portland, and with Rubio set to join Minnesota, Fernandez may find extreme comfort in playing alongside the point guard.

He'd immediately start for the team at the 2 spot, and there's no doubt he could certainly be a prolific outside shooter who could really stretch the floor for a team that failed to do so last season.

Detroit Pistons

AUBURN HILLS, MI - APRIL 26: Richard Hamilton #32 of the Detroit Pistons is introduced prior to Game Four of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against the Cleveland Cavaliers during the 2009 NBA Playoffs at the Palace of Auburn Hills on April 26, 2009

Minnesota Acquires: SG Richard Hamilton, SG Terrico White

Detroit Acquires: PG Jonny Flynn, SF Martell Webster, C Nikola Pekovic

It's no secret that the Pistons are desperate to unload Hamilton and his bloated contract as they enter a re-building mode, and the Timberwolves are equally as antsy to acquire a capable shooting guard.

Acquiring Hamilton would be a solid move for the team as they look to put some talent around Kevin Love, and a pairing of Rip and Rubio in the backcourt is certainly more fearsome than anything the team has had in a while.

Detroit needs help in the middle behind Greg Monroe, and Pekovic proved that he's certainly got some NBA skills in his time on the court last season. Webster and Flynn would both serve to bolster the second unit, as the team doesn't have much depth.

Minnesota Acquires: SG John Salmons, PG Keyon Dooling

Milwaukee Acquires: PG Jonny Flynn, C Nikola Pekovic

For any Bucks fans that are counting on a full slate of games from an oft-injured Andrew Bogut, the injury problems of a big man don't suddenly evaporate overnight.

Pekovic would serve as a reasonable insurance policy, and would be a lot more intimidating than an undersized Larry Sanders in the middle.

Acquiring Flynn would replace Dooling as the backup point guard, and he won't be expected to have a major role considering the youth of starter Brandon Jennings.

For Minnesota, it's another scenario that lands them a 2 guard that can start and improve the team immediately without having to sacrifice any of the club's real assets. The Bucks want to find some financial relief and the Timberwolves are under the cap.

Oklahoma City Thunder

5 of 5

Minnesota Acquires: SG Thabo Sefolosha, C Cole Aldrich

Oklahoma City Acquires: SG Wayne Ellington, SF Martell Webster

Thabo Sefolosha has proven to be a very positive asset on a young Thunder team that thrived off of his defensive intensity, but now that James Harden has emerged as the probable starter heading into next season, his role is set to be relegated to something very different.

Despite the club acquiring Aldrich after he was selected in the lottery last year, he failed to contribute much in his rookie season, bouncing between the D-League and the big stage.

For the T-Wolves, they get a cheap big man which would allow the team to move some of their pricier options at the position and a very solid veteran in Sefolosha for a team filled with youngsters.

Although the Thunder don't need much, adding both Ellington and Webster would help to provide a scoring punch to the second unit that's going to need it if Harden is indeed elevated to the starting five.
