Should the WEC Merge with the UFC?
The WEC is a sister organization of the UFC, and has recently let go of its middleweight and light heavyweight divisions. That leaves one to wonder: Can it survive with just three weight classes and a handful of marketable names?
Urijah Faber, Carlos Condit, Miguel Torres, Jens Pulver, Manny Tapia. Granted, these names will garner decent attention, but will that be enough?
I personally think they should combine with the UFC and get rid of the bantamweight class. Make Miguel move up and have a super fight with Urijah. They could go as far as to have both fighters be the coaches of the next TUF season.
Season 10 would feature 32 featherweight fighters—after they incorporated all of the WEC's feathers, they should have a somewhat deep division. Just think of it...more than a few bantamweight fighters would move up, and other organizations' fighters would be salivating at the chance to fight in the UFC octagon. Then, to top of the season, both coaches would fight at the PPV after the finale.
As far as welterweight, well, it'd obviously be best to have Carlos Condit face the No. 1 contender. Should he win, then he would go on to face Georges St. Pierre.
The lightweight division would be an easy transition. Have Jamie Varner face the No. 1. Should he win, he would get a title shot. Rob McCullough is a marketable fighter with the right promotion. They also have a lot of "TapOut" show fighters among these weight classes, which would also be a welcomed addition to the UFC talent pool.
The two promotions have to be thinking about merging, or maybe not.The WEC should also look into the EXC Women's Division. That would help their chances of lasting past WEC 37. Also it would give Dana and Zuffa a alittle love from the ladies side. But it may not last that long..
I would like to see it happen, but only time will tell if it does. I know there are many reasons it wont happen, but it would definitely be a good move in my book.
