Anderson Silva Says There Is 'No Chance' of Him Fighting Jon Jones

Mike HodgesApr 15, 2011

A super-fight that nearly all fans were dreaming to watch will be nothing more than that.

According to Bloodyelbow.com, UFC Middleweight champion, Anderson Silva made it clear that he has no intention to get involved in a potential matchup against UFC Light-Heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

Silva, who will be defending his middleweight crown against Yushin Okami at UFC Rio later this summer, recently expressed his disinterest in the fight during an interview with Brazilian website Esportes.r7.com.

Silva says he prefers to not fight Jones due to their new found friendship.

"No chance," Silva said.

"He's in a different weight class, and we are friends, and we won't fight each other."

However during the interview, Silva was more open to a superfight with UFC Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre, who will defend his title against Jake Shields later this month at UFC 129.

But in order for their superfight to happen, Silva says both he and St. Pierre must successfully defend their titles.

"There is a chance there, everything will depend on our results. It depends on him winning at UFC 129 and me winning in August (against Yushin Okami). And from there, who knows, this fight could take place."

The idea of competing against a friend is nothing new for the middleweight champion.

In May 2009, his close friend and teammate Lyoto Machida defeated Rashad Evans for the UFC Light-Heavyweight title. An immediate out-cry followed as both fans and critics were demanding a matchup featuring Silva and Machida. The reason why this matchup generated so much interest was because Machida and Silva were dominant in their respective weight classes and they presented similar fighting styles.

But Silva, again, was reluctant to the idea and said their friendship was more important.
