Chicago Bears Hold Off Eagles Comeback

Jay AndersonSep 29, 2008

Unstoppable.

This is the only word that can describe the Bears' run defense, especially on a decisive 4th and goal play that held the Eagles just short of any chance of winning the game.

“There were opportunities there,” Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb said. “We just didn’t capitalize on it.”

The Eagles looked to be one their way to victory until 2nd and goal on the 1-yard line came and turned to 3rd and goal and 4th and goal in the same position, the only problem? The Eagles could not score on a key drive of the game and the Bears stood tall and came out with a victory.

“It’s make a play,” Bears' defensive end Alex Brown said. “Everybody was thinking the same thing. I was the guy who got my hands on him, but we had other guys keep him out of the end zone. It wasn’t just me. I’m not going to sit here and take credit for it. That play was a complete defensive effort and it was a special way to end that game for us. It was great.”

The Eagles defense did everything in their power to put the Eagles at an advantage. The defense came out in the second half with a bang, holding the Bears to only 3 points. They got sacks, they forced fumbles, and they even got an interception when it looked as if the Bears would score in their red zone.

But, the thing that hurt the Eagles in the long run, field goal kicking. David Akers missed two key field goal attempts on stalled drives, one off the goal post for 47 yards and another wide-right (50 yards).

Rookie DeSean Jackson came out on the Eagles second drive and looked more like a veteran with 66 scrimmages yards (21 rushing yards and 45 passing yards) and a touchdown pass. His success soon ended after a muffed punt and he looked tentative after that.

The Eagles are now 2-2, 4th in the NFC East, and face the Washington Redskins at home, who pulled off an impressive win at Dallas this past week.
