Dolphins Offseason: It's Trent Green's Time To Retire

xx yyJan 9, 2008

Trent Green went on Pardon The Interruption today and told Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser that he was thinking about his future as an NFL Quarterback; That depending on the next few months, Green could come back to play.

His other concerns included the directions the Dolphins are headed and what Bill Parcells has planned for the team. I've got one request however:

Trent, put down the clipboard and pick up a microphone. Please.

Whether Green still has "the itch" or not should be irrelevant at this point. The truth of the matter is, is that Green has suffered two serious concussions in two seasons. In nearly any other situation, being two-for-two is great, but not in this one.

If Green returns to the field, he's not only hindering an NFL team with injury concerns, but he's endangering his health.

After each concussion you suffer, the odds as to whether you suffer another are increased. With each successive concussion, your risk for extended or possibly permanent damage is increased.

If Green were to come back and suffer his third concussion, then it's very likely that cumulative damage may occur, leaving him in a state similar to that of former boxers.

If Trent were to walk away today however, and remove the chance of another sports-related concussion, it's not like his career has gone unfulfilled.

The former Chargers, Redskins, Rams, and Chiefs QB has been selected to the Pro Bowl twice, and also carries a Super Bowl ring. He's also etched his name in the NFL record book a few times, which includes being part of the highest passing duo in NFL history (5,232 yards in 2000 with Kurt Warner and the Rams) and being the only Quarterback to own a QB Rating of 90.0 or more for three straight seasons.

It's also likely that Green would find employment soon in other football capacities.

Sit down and listen to him for five minutes, and Trent Green is a man who knows of what he speaks. Where players such as Deion Sanders, Tiki Barber, and Keyshawn Johnson go on TV just to keep on pulling down pay-cheques, Trent Green offers you someone who can give you an assessment that matters, and information that's relevant.

Wherever he ends up, those who get to work around him should count their blessings. Just please Trent, count your own blessings and move on, because the next time you get hit, you could leave on terms even worse than these.
