UFC Title Fights: Which Are The Best Upcoming Fights?
After the announcement of the rematch between lightweights Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard I wondered, what are the top upcoming UFC title fights?
The UFC has a lot of high quality title fights scheduled for the first half of the year and with the first UFC event already done and over with, these are the top upcoming title fights for the UFC.
5. Jose Aldo Vs. Mark Hominick- Featherweight Championship at UFC 129
1 of 5
This isn't exactly a title fight yet but it could very much be one.
Mark Hominick has a lot on the line at UFC Fight for the Troops. A win versus George Roop he secures his place as the co-main event at UFC 129 versus Jose Aldo. A loss, and well, like Dana White said "I don't know, back to the drawing board."
Roop can play a huge spoiler here and take out Hominick and make Dana White consider another opponent to face off against Aldo, who will be making his UFC debut at UFC 129.
Hominick is on a four fight win streak coming from the WEC with his last win coming against Leonard Garcia at WEC 51.
If this fight does happen it will be bumped a little to either fourth or third. Hominick will be Aldo's first opponent whose strength lies in his striking. Aldo could easily walk through Hominick but, don't underestimate Hominick.
4. Georges St-Pierre Vs. Jake Shields- Welterweight Championship at UFC 129
2 of 5
Jake Shields will face Georges St-Pierre at UFC 129 on April 30th. GSP, a Quebec, Canada native, will once again be fighting in Canada.
Jake Shields and GSP make for a great fight as both rank in the top 10 pound for pound rankings on numerous sites.
GSP is a nightmare for Jake Shields. Shields will be lucky to take down GSP and even in so doing, GSP still has the upper hand on the ground.
It's number four only because GSP will take this fight hands down even though Shields could give him a run for his money.
3. Shogun Rua Vs. Rashad Evans- Light Heavyweight Championship at UFC 128
3 of 5
TShogun versus Rashad is interesting as these ext two fights could go either way.
Shogun is coming off knee surgery and it will be interesting to see which Shogun shows up to this fight. Do we see the Shogun who was able to beat Machida or do we see the Shogun who lost to perennial caveman Forrest Griffin?
Rashad he doesn't have the ability to go five rounds and could run out of gas early on. He has won five of his last six with wins over Rampage, Thiago Silva, Chuck Liddell, Michael Bisping and Forrest Griffin.
Evans could exploit Shogun's poor take down defense and grind him out for the win but Shogun is very skilled on his back. Both fighters have excellent stand-up.
2. Anderson Silva Vs. Vitor Belfort- Middleweight Championship at UFC 126
4 of 5
Vitor Belfort comes into this fight facing off against Anderson Silva with a lot of hype behind him These two face off February 5th at UFC 126
Silva was tested for the first time in a while coming off a win versus Chael Sonnen.
If Vitor lives up to all the hype surrounding him he can give Anderson a tough fight. If Anderson wins it will be his eighth title defense in a row. It could be very intense "The Spider.
1. Frankie Edgar Vs. Gray Maynard- Lightweight Championship at UFC 130
5 of 5
This will be a rematch of the first title fight of the year. Both fighters put on an extraordinary show in the first match, ending up in a draw.
Both fighters entered the fight on big win streaks, (Edgar a five match and Maynard an eight match streak), and showed off both of their skill sets.
Edgar had a nasal fracture after their last match and has hurried back to face off versus Maynard in UFC 130 on May 28 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
This is by far the best title fight as it features two of the best lightweights in the division. A dramatic draw ended their last fight, who knows what could end this one.
