This is the second-half wrap-up from the evening's game.
As things went along, it was becoming more and more obvious...our defense needs help. Badly.
Again, another flag-happy ref felt the Raiders were slowing the game down too much and gave an unsportsmanlike flag to Gibril Wilson, and then another for a facemask to Selvin Young. Honestly, if you're going to get flagged for it...make it worthwhile. Dislocate the guy's neck.
To be honest, if earlier in the game I had known the refs were going to be this bad, I would have recomended Hall do a pile driver to Royal on the sidelines instead of helping him up.
One thing that should also be mentioned is that Kiffin needs to get everyone up and on the same page. There's no reason why we should have been 2-for-12 on third-down plays.
- B/R Ticket Guide
Another good example of the progress that is being made: Look at Cutler's rating and Russell's rating. Cutler was lighting it up for a 137.3 rating, and Russell was at 111.1. Both would be nothing to sneeze at.
Play selection proved to be vital in a few cases. For example, on one play, Russell decided to roll out in traffic, losing a ball in field-goal range.
The choice to run it on 4th-and-1, deep in Oakland's side, wasn't the brightest idea though.
All in all, I'd say what the Raiders need to do is fix the defense. If we weren't playing catch-up all day, we could run the offense with Russell and McFadden making gains, and Fargas picking it up, but if we can't stop the opposing team...it's all a moot point.
It'll be easier to see just how bad the defense is against KC. Last week, they had a close one against New England.
As for the Broncos, it'll be interesting to see how they match up against other defensive clubs, like the Ravens or the Chargers...Of course, this first week, it seems the underdogs ruled the day, with no less than four upsets to speak of.
Note to Kiffin: Go find some defensive players. And lose Ryan somewhere along the way.

You got to love that vaulted defense and high power running game I have been reading about all off season that the raiders was going to have this year and how hard Russsell was going to be to sack yup 5-11 starting to look about right

WOW I thought i would be 21-1O broncos but damn they got blown out. Its so funny how your raider fans were saying how you got all those players an what happens you get beat.
from 2 months ago
Well, some things to think about.
First of all, we lost our primary Fullback, and a WR, for the year.
Then we lost both Kalimba Edwards, and Javon Walker for this game.....anybody's guess on when they'll play.
Last I heard, near the end of the game, McFadden was removed for a shoulder, don't know the specs on that injury, was rushing for 5.1 yards a carry before then.
Derrick Burgess, also left, and the trainers were working on him too.
You lose key pieces, your team is going to have problems. Ask the Patriot fans how well they'll play now without Brady.....think they'll go 16-0?
Doubtful. Even the realists will admit it'll be less than perfect.
Put the shoe on the other foot. if Cutler goes down with a seperated shoulder, do you think the Broncos will still be high-powered?

whoh whoh whoh ther RCA, losing a quarterback and losing even a #1 receiver are two COMPLETELY different scenarios. I gotta hand it to you though, you always have an excuse. I have a theory about how your season will turn out, you'll have lots of "injuries" because players don't want to be seen on the field due to sheer embarrasment. Histerical!

You're a true fan Terry. He said it all, and that is all I have to say!

40whiner Mike-
The Raiders were really bad, there is no doubt about it. The worst loss in two years. A team they beat by 14 points last season totally dominated them from an effort, scheme and execution standpoint.
That being said, Russell and McFadden played well. Russell played well in his second start, especially given the fact that the Bronco dogs were coming free every play. The guy completed 65% of his passes and if Curry does not drop a perfect pass, he has a 50yd TD strike in the first quarter.
If you want to come off as intelligent, talk about how D'Angelo hall got smoked by a rookie receiver for 140+ yards. Just so you know, there were only two passes thrown at #21.
I'm not posting here to rip the 49er's or defend the Raiders, just to tell you to come back AFTER you've pulled your head out, because you are clueless about you saw last night or what you are writing about.

Raiders have a very good defense when you look at the players.... so i can only blame the defensive schemes.... something that is apparently nothing to do with Kiffin.... so when do we get rid of Ryan and bring in a new coach with a successful scheme because our star defensive backs were beaten by very average players to be honest...
from 2 months ago
Your "star" DB's got beat in man and zone dude. Plus, if they were really as great as hyped, they would have had some int's or something to show for all that zone they were playing. I would blame the D line for not getting pressure, but they got beat quick, slow, long, short, on the run, they over pursued trick plays, they looked BAD.
from 2 months ago
Rory-
The Raiders don't have a very good defense, despite what you've read. Go back and watch the film of yesterday's game. We got beat because we had no effort whatsoever. Should we have blitzed more? Maybe. But with the effort given last night, a different scheme would not have made a difference.
from 2 months ago
Hey, Ryan is Al's stooge....He's protected by Al. Remember when Kiffin tried to dismiss him at the end of last season? Ryan should not have to worry about his job; after all, he's only executing the defense strategy called in from Al upstairs...

Good Grief,
I'm glad I got my time zones a bit mixed up and didn't get up at some unearthly hour to catch this one! Swiched on my laptop at about 6.20 (GMT) this morning only for the NFL website to tell me we were 41-7 down, promptly turned it back off and went for some cornflakes...
I wouldn't want to be the one to pick the bones out of this jellyfish. How many weeks left?

MOst of the game I noticed we were in zone coverage with no blitz. That gives any QB a chance to look like Cutler did last night. If we have these " man2man corners" Use them in man coverage and blitz the ____ out of the QB. NO blitz no chance.
from 2 months ago
Again, they got beat quickly just as many times as they got beat because of no pass rush.
You can blame the scheme or the coaches but to me you should be blaming those over priced players when your defense isn't getting to the QB and he has all day to throw it's like taking candy from a baby and personally I never thought Hall was any thing more than a team killer with his stupid personal foul penalties which extend drives he did the same when he played for the Falcons AND YOUR Offense isn't good enough to come back from a big deficit you have basically a rookie QB and the WR's wouldn't make many other teams 5 0r 6 wins would be a great year for the Raiders

HAHAHAHA. Wow that was embarrassing!!! For all the hating that you have done on the Broncos during the offseason.....that was hilarious. The Raiders haven't looked this bad in a while, which is saying something. Finally Raider Nation will climb back into the woodwork and we won't have to hear anymore ridiculous football "insight" until next offseason. Can't wait till we play you with Brandon Marshall. OOOHHH YEEA, it tastes so good!!!!!
from 2 months ago
It kills me! After every game it's we should do this, next time we'll do that, or, the refs were blind. Until the offseason and it's, we bought this guy, we got rid of that guy... It's never that the Raider organization is COMPLETELY jacked up. COMPLETELY

As I've said here before I'm a lifelong Raider fan and always will be but here are the facts, just as I said two months ago.
One: The offensive line sucks, sucks, sucks. First quarter, first time Russell went back to throw on a third and goal. He had three defenders in his face before he finished his (three step) drop. Pitiful. Of course when I noted the total lack of attention to the offensive line before I was told to "get a new team". Anyone who has even played Pop Warner football (and I'm starting to think there are just a bunch of jock sniffers on this site) can tell you that football is won up front. Without blockers on offense and a front seven that can stop the run and pressure the quarterback on defense, it will never matter how many high priced skill players you have because they will never be freed up.
Two: The defense can't stop the run, and that will last all season. Again, I asked this off-season: Why is it that every year we either draft a safety, sign some high priced receiver or cornerback, or just change the coordinator? When was the last time the Raiders actually invested in their front seven in a meaningful way? I'll tell you: About eight years ago when they drafted Russell out of USC. Don't tell me about Warren Sapp, or some no-name linebacker who got cut by some other team. No, it's cornerback, cornerback, safety, cornerback.....every fucking year.
Three: Coaching. Once again there is no discipline on the field. Isn't it funny how under Gruden those "horrible refs" kept their flags in their pockets? That man should still be the coach of this team. That was Davis' ego, and nothing else. They wouldn't be in the superbowl every year, but they would play hard and be penalized much less. Kiffin is out of his league but it's hard to know how much of it is his fault and how much is Davis.
Bottom Line: 4-12 is looking pretty good.
from 2 months ago
Finally, an honest Raider fan. Honest with himself, about the team, about al davis, and the history of the organization. YOU HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD! except maybe the 4-12 part; I think they may look better towards the end of the season, as they are a very young team.

Players need to be held accountable. The handling of Jamarcus from last year to this year has been terrible. He should have been playing last season. Now he is trying to learn everything this year. Lane Kiffin needs to take the handcuffs off of Russell and let him throw the ball downfield. When he go deep he has success. Russell can be good if you let him. Kiffin needs to let Russell be himself. I went to sleep on my team for the first time in my entire life. I was ashamed to be a Raider fan last night.
from 2 months ago
You make a good point about the play calling; I found it to be conservative at best. J-Rock definitely needs the opportunity to throw a strong ball. He's got the gun, now he needs the play calling to match his skill set.

Raidercard-
I was at the game. I have never been so embarrased in my life. I can't remember the last time I left with over 13 minutes left in the 4th qtr. I was shocked at the lack of effort. The only saving grace was that Russell played with composure.
I realized leaving the stadium that Al Davis is soley to blam for this loss.
Royal catching 9 balls for 140+ yards = Davis' fault for giving Hall a $70 million deal.
Rob Ryan being completely outschemed by Shanahan = Davis fault for not going with Kiffin and firing him at the end of last year.
Run defense being terrible = Davis fault for giving Kelly to much $ for too little talent.
At 79 years old, the guy needs to pass along the keys...

I feel that Jamarcus wasn't amazing but i told myself that i would treat the first half of the season as part of his rookie year and not blame him... I agree the guys around him could have done alot more to help especially blockers.... they could have helped our ground game (which has the RB's to be very good)... Im hoping that Hall's penalties were something to do with over enthusiasm at trying to impress his new croud although that is unlikely, but hopefully not repeated because I dont like bad sportsman whatever the game and it didnt help at all.... hopefully he will stop being so arogant and not let himslef get embarresed again... i was hoping for more blitzes and alot more success on the D line as i think that is probably the most important reason for losing... will we later regret passing on Ellis and Dorsey in the draft??? who knows but we have a very young team and so i strongly believe in 3 years we will be a good team again... if we are wise about what we do... but i think this team will improve over the season and so can see us going 6-10

hey mike your 49ers did'nt do such a great job either, so please keep it down boy. what i could see from last night is that without a pass rush we are gonna have a long season, it's not only stopping the run it's the whole thing that d-line is awful to its best, damn i felt ashamed of being a raider fan, i saw burgess gettin double teamed and nobody else to take the slot, richardson played ok but he's nowhere ready to be a pass rush treat and the bunch of money spent on guys that dont deliver, it's obvious that the raider organization as no respect for us fans, the players or themselves..spending money its not the solution, the solution is gettin guys that are playmakers and not mercenaries, because as far as can see our team as a bunch of mercs and nothing else. we the fans dont deserve this lowusy product.

It's only one game, its not a one game season, theres still 15 more games to be played. Lets not forget that last season the Giants lost pretty badly last year in week 1 with teams averaging 40+ pts a game on them in there first 4 outings. Its all how you react to situations, hopefully this will humble them and starve them for success. We'll bounce back, hang in there my Raider brothers.

Well, to turn the page.....Kansas City Chiefs, missing Brodie Croyle. Good thing, bad thing, curious thing?

Jamarcus had a pretty darn good game. Yes, he did have that one fumble. Yes, his team lost. But he had zero interceptions and his teams defense took him out of the patient running game. The defense did not give up 41 points because of the bad field position that the offense gave them. If our defense played like this in 2005, you would have seen scores in the 60s against us.
DeAngelo was constantly looking for the int against Royal and kept getting beat by double moves. The d-line got no pressure on Cutler. There were a couple of times that Ricky Brown looked a little lost in pass coverage. Also, all the penalties, especially on the defense, didn't help.
In my book, this loss goes on RobRyan's scheme. Give an NFL QB, any NFL QB, that much time and he will fillet your defense.
My question on this game is simple. How did the Denver Broncos play this game and commit a single live ball penalty? They had 3 penalties. 2 were illegal formation and the other was an intentional delay of game. Never a hold? No PIs? No hands to the facemask? Nothing? Hmmmnnn.

I think the score would have been a little closer. The Raiders had the touchdown on their first possion, at the end of the half they were going down the field, they were on a roll! Couple other drives, couple of miss passes that would have kept the drive alive. Everybody is saying the receivers were horrible Jamarcus played horrible, the Rb didn’t do anything. blah blah blah. From what I saw they had a pretty decent game. I just hope they keep it up and the defense NEEDS to step up. I’m only hoping the reason why they played so bad is because this was the first time playing together. But the season is still way too young to like I said in my last post im still excited.

I was also at this game, and I stayed for the entire massacre. The blame for this does not fall on JaMarcus, or McFadden or Kiffin. The blame for this falls on the defense as a whole.
While sitting in my hotel Monday night after the game, Nnamdi was on TV stating that the defense failed this game. They played flat.
Exactly, no blitz, missed tackles, missed coverage (by Hall...a lot) This is NOT KIFFIN"S FAULT!!!! I can't say that enough. Nor is this JaMarcus's fault. For God's sake, he went 17/26 180 with 2 TD's on a team that wasn't destined to be a passing team.
You CANNOT give the opposing QB as much time as he was given. That's ridiculous.
Denver didn't win this, it was handed to them.
And Chris, he didn't leave the strap-on here, find a farm with sheep and there ya go.
And Mike49er or whoever you are this week, respond away, I don't read your posts and could care less what you think
Nice article RCA!

Odd question, Mike.
You were talking about Harris, who you felt was worthless as a 49er.
It's one thing if the guy played, and played badly.
Harris never even play. So i'd say the jury is out.
And, speak of the devil, again....call us losers?
Please tell us how well the 49ers did.....they won, right?
How many touchdowns, did they score?
How many times did they turn the ball over?
Just some simple questions....I know the Raiders scored 2 touchdowns, turned the ball over once on a fumble, did lose it on downs once, and scored 14 points.
Now, compare the Raiders vs the 49ers.....which team is better?
And which team also faced a tougher club?
Lastly, I'd love it, but it would never happen....do you think the 49ers could even score against the broncos?
