I have been noticing so many predictions on the Redskins' roster cuts that I decided to offer my own. This is based on my own opinions of each player's performance throughout the preseason and training camp.

Sorry for this, but B/R isn't handling my table well, so I posted it on my blog.

My Roster List

Click here to see where I differed from Zorn and the Redskins.

This does not reflect the players I would sign to the practice squad.

Please comment here so B/R gets the clicks, not my blog.

I tried to put it here, but it just wouldn't stop really screwing up the page. I will try to edit it again so it will show here better.

Red highlighted are cuts, yellow are my "bubble" guys, and green are signed to the roster.

And here is the list of the official cuts:

  • QB Derek Devine
  • RB Marcus Mason
  • FB Nehemiah Broughton
  • WR Maurice Mann
  • WR Horace Gant
  • WR Billy McMullen
  • WR Anthony Mix
  • DT Matthias Askew
  • DT Ryan Boschetti
  • T Devin Clark
  • T Todd Wade
  • T Tavares Washington
  • G Andrew Crummey
  • G Fred Matua
  • LB Curtis Gatewood
  • LB David Holloway
  • LB Danny Verdun-Wheeler
  • S Patrick Ghee
  • CB Cedrick Holt
  • CB Matterral Richardson
  • CB Byron Westbrook
  • P Derrick Frost

I'm only surprised by a couple of these. McMullen, Richardson, and Boschetti. These guys performed well. Surprised that Zorn went with only 5 wide outs, but he is apparently more concerned with O-Line depth. A lot of defensive ends on the roster, can anyone say "Giants won the Super Bowl"?

I would definitely not cut Tryon. He may need to drastically improve his cover skills, but his tackling is great. Unlike the other corners, he was a draft pick. Just let him develop.

Over which one though? Gonna cut Richardson? He has shown much more potential than Tryon. I would try to put Tryon on the PS, but I wouldn't give up a roster spot to him at this point.

Anyone who has read any of stuff knows I am a pretty optimistic Skins fan, but mistakes were made here, and I hope they don't bite us too hard.

With the cuts? I didn't find too many problems.

I expected Mason to make it, but, then again, he was never going to get any playing time.

I was disappointed in keeping only five wideouts, though. I guess Kelly's knees are okay. Having a West Coast Offense should have warranted keeping McMullen or Mix or someone. Apparently keeping Justin Hamilton as the fifth safety was more important than keeping a sixth wideout.

Other than that, I'm fine with the cuts made. I'm glad Durant Brooks got the punting job, too.

YUP. I've been pretty consistent with my overall assessment of this roster. The only ones I don't like are Richardson, McMullen, and keeping so many DEs. Should be another wide out or another O-Linemen, Tavares Washington played well for the most part, or Crummey, I thought one of them would make it over Jackson being active and Hamilton staying put. And boschettig will probably be back again in several weeks. That's how it's been for him.

Boschetti was great in Preseason. He seemed to make more big plays than anyone on the D-Line.

I also find it interesting that Zorn hasn't released a statement yet, just Cerrato. I hate to fuel the fire against the front office, but this list of cuts reeks of Zorn having very little input.

Boschetti & Mason got shafted. Justin Tryon deserved to be cut but the secondary (CBs) are a big worry so he made it. Amazing that all the draft picks made it even though very few distinguised themselves. If Devin Thomas wasn't a high draft pick he would have been an easy cut with a wretched pre-season. They needed to carry a lot of DEs because of the uncertain status of Jason Taylor and Erasmus James. I'm still not confident they'll be putting the pressure on opposing QBs as it stands. They might want to take a look at serviceable CBs that have been cut around the league. Does anybody actually think that Carlos Rogers is good? I'm happy they cut Frost and are starting over with the potential of Durant. Frost probably (slightly) outplayed Brooks in camp but Derek Frost makes a habit out of disappointing in the regular season.

Agree with most of your points Chuck, but, yes, I do think Rogers is a pretty good corner. I do disagree with: "Amazing that all the draft picks made it even though very few distinguised themselves"
I thought Tryon was the only one who should have bee cut(Richardson outplayed him through out the preseason), I thought Jackson would be cut (signed to the PS) only because there are so many DEs on the roster ahead of him.

And Thomas has BIGTIME updside, that's his thing. He did look lost a lot, but rookie wide outs often do.
Mason deserves a shot, but there are too many backs on this team already, he'll play somewhere this year. And I expect Boschetti to come back, we seem to cut that guy every year, and then call him back several weeks later, just hope he's still available.

Oh yeah, the early picks have upsides but just didn't show it in the preseason - injury helped a little - and incredibly - a lack of conditioning Zorn says. Sounds like you DO agree with me that it's surprising all the draft picks made it since you thought Jackson & Tryon wouldn't make it. Kareem Moore, Colt Brennan and perhaps Horton at least showed enough in the preseason to earn spots. The rest of the guys were included on the final roster because of their potential. Not sure How Rinehart did in preseason...

Rogers hasn't fulfilled the promise and can't seem to hold onto the damn ball - I still hold it against him that he dropped that sure interception to his chest in the Seahawks Playoff loss three years ago. Plus, he wasn't missed after he went out with the injury this last year and the Cornerback situation actually improved.

I wonder if they'll look at any veterans cut from other teams such as DE Jerome McDougle from the Eagles - the Giants might have some interest -- or CB Tyrone Poole (can he still play?). Interesting to see that Adam Archuleta got cut by the Raiders - when/how did he leave the Bears?

Yeah, I guess I do agree with some surprise to all of the picks making it. Rinehart had a fantastic camp and preseason, looks like an excellent pick. And Jackson made plays, but just too many DEs already on the roster. Moore, Horton, Brennan, Brooks, Fred Davis, Rinehart, Jackson all showed pretty good in camp and preseason, for the most part, above their draft status. Kelly and Thomas couldn't show much with the injuries, but the potential is worth roster spots. Tryon, just looked bad on the field. Never could make a play on the ball, strong tackler, but not much in coverage.

I can understand your feelings about Rogers, but seriously, when he got hurt last year, he had been having a very good season. And you need to remember that the defense did go through a pretty rough stretch where they couldn't stop anybody immediately following his injury. They didn't actually start improving again until Landry was put at Free Safety in Taylor's place. He has not lived up to 9th pick in the draft status, but he is still a pretty good corner.

Why do we need another DE? McDougle?

The bears cut Arch a long time ago, and the Raiders signed him. I'm not so sure about Poole, he would likely be productive in dime, but it wouldn't be a good idea to ask much more of him.

I suppose they'd only be interested in veteran DEs if they see the Taylor injury as being worse then earlier perceived and/or Erasmus James can't recapture his form from years ago (college). The cornerback situation is the worry. I don't think Rogers should have been cut but he needs to prove somethng to me. If he can help turn the tide against the Giants next week I will become a convert. I have no idea how they'll do this year - I'm a little concerned about the defense but feel that the offense will show some improvement over last year - though it might take a few games to get their act together. I am guessing a 7-9 year - but pray my pessimistic prediction is proven preposterous.

I don't think your concerns are unfounded at all. I feel much the same way, but perhaps with a bit more optimism. I expect the Skins will have a shot at the playoffs with a late run, the offense getting better towards the end of the year. It could be rough year, but I'll be surprised if it goes terribly.
