3 Reasons Miami Dolphin Fans Are Happy Favre Is a Jet

Michael NorthAug 7, 2008

Prior to Ricky Williams’ Cheech and Chong related wanderings and the catastrophic coaching tenures of Nick Saban and Cam Cameron, news of Brett Favre heading to the Jets would be cause for concern for the city of Miami.  Actually, the most hated rival of the Miami Dolphins landing one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time coming off a career year would have induced riots from Key West to Palm Beach.

However, it is remarkably quiet in South Florida and that is because Broadway Brett is actually a positive for the Dolphins. When your team compiles a grand total of one win the previous year, you look for the silver lining in any situation, and Favre suiting up for the Jets will benefit the Dolphins.

How you may ask? In three small, but good enough ways to bring a smile to any Dolfan’s face.

By adding Brett Favre, the Jets have significantly closed the gap on the Patriots. New England used to be able to count on six guaranteed victories coming from the decrepit AFC East. Now, the Pats will have their hands full against the much improved Jets.

New York added players like Alan Faneca, Damien Woody, Calvin Pace, and Kris Jenkins before the addition of Favre. These players should provide a massive impact on their respective side of the ball.

Meanwhile, the Patriots’ most significant off-season transaction consists of replacing cornerback Asante Samuel with Fernando Bryant.

If you are a Miami fan like me, you are probably sick of the Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics and anything else Boston related (okay, The Departed was a cool movie and should not be included). The Jets, led by Brett Favre, will be more like a road block than a speed bump for the Pats, and could be a team good enough to stand in the way of a Super Bowl run.

Possible Pats’ failure makes a Dolphins’ last place finish somewhat palatable.

Favre to the Jets also guarantees Miami citizens an opportunity to watch a legend in person when the Jets take on the Dolphins to open the season.

The baseball schedule guaranteed fans the opportunity to watch Barry Bonds one last time in every National League city. However, the structure of the NFL schedule would not allow some cities to glimpse future Hall of Famer Favre one last time, or second to last time, or third to last time (never can tell with Favre’s "retirements" anymore).

We Miami fans are blessed to kick off the season with a loss to the Jets at the hands of Brett Favre.

Call me crazy, but watching Favre rack up fantasy points while hearing transplanted New Yorkers manage to spell J-E-T-S the whole game doesn’t seem all that bad. It’s a heck of a lot more respectable than losing to Chad Pennington’s rag arm.

Lastly, just like in Green Bay with Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre will delay the development of Kellen Clemens. Clemens may not be the second coming of Peyton Manning, but maybe he is. As long as Favre is the starter, Clemens will idle like an unknown sports car sitting behind door number two on a game show.

This is good news for the Dolphins because Clemens has shown flashes of talent. He has the tools and the pieces around him to be a good quarterback. But no one knows how good he can be until he is given full control of the offense. And if this off-season is any indication, Brett Favre has trouble handing the reins to the next guy.

If the Dolphins can find their answer at quarterback before Clemens is allowed to start, then the Fins will be slightly ahead of the Jets. The clock is ticking, but as long as Favre is starting, the Jets are delaying the future and possibly hurting Clemens’ chances at stardom.

Regardless, the Dolphins will be lousy no matter which team employs Brett Favre. The Fins are probably destined for anywhere between three and six wins next season so one might as well look at the positives.

Favre in New York ensures two tougher games for the Patriots, and possibly a third in the playoffs, all the while clouding the future of the quarterback position for the Jets. Fortunately, we Dolphin fans will have the opportunity to watch it all take place from our AFC East front row seats.

Just so you know, as much as I like Brett Favre, I will never chant J-E-T-S at any point next season. Okay, I might against the Patriots.
