Floyd Mayweather Is the Kanye West of Boxing

King JJul 21, 2010

In a famous episode of HBO 24/7 Floyd Mayweather Jr. was seen in his Las Vegas mansion with rapper 50 Cent hanging out. 50 Cent stated that he was the Floyd Mayweather of the rap game and that Floyd was the 50 Cent of boxing. Personally I disagree with that statement. 50 Cent’s rap career has been struggling and he has been way past his prime for years. In contrast,  Mayweather has been on top of his boxing career for the last several years. Plus, lets keep it real, Mayweather is a gifted boxing master.  50 Cent would get murdered in any real underground freestyle battle, let alone a commercial rap war.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is more like the Kanye West of boxing. Now whether you care for Kanye or not would determine what this metaphor really means. I happen to be a big fan of Floyd Mayweather and a huge fan of Kanye West.   For me personally being the Kanye West of any genre or industry is a big time compliment.  Kanye is bottom line a genius and a master at producing incredible hip hop music.

But just like Floyd, Kanye is also known for his tremendous ego and arrogance which is accompanied by a big mouth the size of Chicago. Kanye has been notorious for throwing tantrums at his competitors and even former President George W. Bush. Many who were fed up with Bush and the lack of help to the victims of Katrina sided with Kanye and admired his boldness to speak his mind on national television against the most powerful man in the free world.

But more shockingly much of the general public turned on Kanye when he made his infamous voice heard on how displeased he was that Taylor Swift beat out Beyonce for a MTV award. Now come on guys we support Kanye when he slams the president of the USA, but when he punks a worthless recyclable teen pop princess we hang him for that? What is wrong with society?

Kanye can say and do virtually whatever he wants because he can back up his claims of greatness in the studio. For example, many who claim they will never like Kanye ever again will be surely getting down and bopping their heads when his new album finally drops. You don’t believe me just listen to his new song Power.

Just as Kanye’s gifts and talents can always save and resurrect his career, Floyd too can act just as  as an arrogant for the cameras and the media because his skills/talent/expertise in the ring will always save him. People hate on Floyd, yet the numbers do not lie when the Pay Per View numbers come in. Whether they pay to see him lose it all equals more money for Mayweather in the end.

For both Kanye and Floyd no matter how much you disprove of their douche bag personalities no one can deny their greatness at what they do.

If you seen the cover of the August issue of Ring Magazine (photo of this article) you see two faces of Floyd Mayweather. On the left side we have a more humble smiling Floyd face and the other is a Louis Vuitton stunna shade wearing, lips puckered up in a New Jersey Shore manner, douche bag face. The headline states: “Mayweather vs Mayweather Who Is the Real Floyd”.

Personally I love both Kanye and Floyd for their overly confident personas. I find them both to be rather inspiring on many levels. Being born in Chicago myself and now currently living in Los Angeles a city known for its fake people, high competition, and most of all image and trend setting, I can fully understand how one must be a total douche bag in order to be on top. In this fake city the douche bags are the ones with the power, money, status, and girls.

When I step into the corporate war room, when I make business deals, when I step into the clubs and bars of this fake city I am just as much of a total douche bag as both Kanye and Floyd. Guess what, it works and it has brought me success.

But more importantly what really matters is how one is towards the ones that matter most to them, such as family, friends, and in Kanye's and Floyd’s case their fans.

Most recently with all of the hype and drama of Floyd not meeting Bob Arum’s supposed Friday deadline for a Pacquiao fight, we do not really know what actually happened. For all we know Arum could have lied or stretched the truth about the negotiations and actual deadline. Maybe Mayweather could have decided to show the world in his mind who is boss by making it clear that he is the top “Gorilla Dog” in this game.

We can all say we are fed up with Floyd, but at the end of day we will all buy his next over priced pay per view fight, no matter who is standing across from him in that ring. I will personally put another 600 miles on my Lexus and drive to Vegas to see his next fight live in person. That’s just how it will all go down and I am just real enough to tell it how it is. We can say how much we do not care for either Floyd or Kanye, but when Floyd finally steps into that ring again or when Kanye drops that new album the numbers won’t lie.
