Statistics Do Not Win Super Bowls!

Robert LewisJul 28, 2008

In every sport, statistics are kept. They tell us who the best player is. They tell us which teams played better in a certain area. Players are inducted to the Hall of Fame based off the statistics they compiled throughout their career.

But does the better team on paper always win? Of course not.

Just ask anyone associated with the New England Patriots. Had statistics played a part in who won the Super Bowl, they would have won last year, and they would have had enough to get them a bye into the second round of the playoffs this year also.

That's what makes the game of football so great. You can have the perfect team, against the biggest under dog in history. And who prevails?  The one with the biggest heart, not the one with the most touchdown receptions in a single season.

There are some great teams with great players, but each year only two get to play for the coveted Super Bowl.

Dan Marino will forever be one of the greats to have played the game, but he never won the big one.

As are many others that are now enshrined in the Hall of Fame, but yet do not have a Super Bowl ring. Should that take away from their legacy? Of course not. But I bet if you ask them, they will say there is a bit of regret having not won a ring.

So why is it, each year this time, we place so much on statistics?

Each year teams get ranked, best to worst, each player is ranked, predictions are made, and so on. But in the end, no one knows which two teams will be playing for, and which one will prevail, as the next Super Bowl Champions.

Not one expert had the Giants even making the playoffs last year there were even talks that Coach Coughlin would soon be shown the door, that Eli Manning would never be as good as his brother and did not posses the leadership skills needed in the NFL, and would Strahan be back?

The Giants lost to the Patriots in week 17 to give the Patriots a perfect regular season. But when it counted, the Giants, statistical underdogs in every column, slayed the giant, and went on to make history.

So with that, I would like to know your thoughts on why we put so much into statistics and before the season has even started, written off certain teams before a snap has been made.
