Favre or no Favre

Tony MorissetJul 25, 2008

Not letting Favre start could haunt the Packers.

There is a big problem that the Green Bay Packers are facing, it may seem simple but boy is it getting complicated. What to do with the best quarterback this past decade? Brett Favre is the only player in NFL history to win three consecutive Most Value Player awards. That is just the beginning of Favre’s glorious resume. Yet he may not wear a Green Bayuniform again. If he does wear a uniform he may have to be a backup. He has started every Packers game since he took a snap in 1992 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It looks kind of weird to not see a number four under center taking a snap. Some children have never seen anyone else but number four under center, but the Packers could be making a big mistake by changing that.

2025 Draft Picks Ready For Leap 🐸

Favre went on television to tell get the facts straighten out. On the Fox News Channel's On the Record with Greta Van Susteren Favre told his side. In the interview, Favre told America that he was ā€œguilty of retiring earlyā€ and ā€œwas never fully committed [to retirement.]ā€

The Packers wanted an answer by draft day, which is understandable. They wanted to know by the time they had to make a decision for their future whether they will have Favre or no Favre. Well with the way the Packers are going, no Favre may come out in this situation which may equal no Super Bowl.

Packers are trying to bargain with Favre, allowing him to come as a backup. A backup with 442 career touchdowns, 5,377 completions, 61,655 passing yards and a regular season record of 160-93. Those are Hall of Fame numbers, but really lets be serious a backup? Any team in the league would take a quarterback with career numbers like those.

Maybe not every team but at least more then a handful.

How about Aaron Rodgers. Yes he never has had a chance to become a star because lets face it he has backed up a star. He is no Favre, and probably never will be. Yes we should give him a chance, but how many Favres’ are out there in the world. It may be years before we see another human on earth put up the numbers Favre has.

If Rodgers doesn’t play this year becomes a free agent and becomes the next Payton Manning, then heck no one knew, but we all know what Favre is capable of doing now. We saw it last year when Favre threw for 4,155 yards and 28 touchdowns. He took his team to the NFC title game and was about 80 yards away to taking the Pack crew to another Super Bowl. May I add he is 38 years old? Some quarterbacks a lot younger then that age would love to be on the field competing for a chance in the NFC title game. Rodgers may never put up numbers like that. Or he may, but being a game away from a NFC title can you really take that chance and not put Favre under center?

During the Packers shareholders meeting, Packers fans actually gave members of the front office a standing ovation. Signs that the cheese heads have gotten over the Favre era, which may not be the smartest thing. Fans aren’t usually the smartest people in town, they sometimes run players out of town and they do what? Win tittles. And even when fans aren’t too happy with their players and want them out, players do perform.

Exhibit A.

Eli Manning. Fans didn’t understand the decision on draft day and he had problems. Where is he now? More Super Bowl rings then Rodgers has.

President and CEO Mark Murphy talked to reporters after the meeting and expressed his view on the situation.

ā€œWe have a lot of confidence in Aaron [Rodgers,]ā€ said Murphy. ā€œHe was drafted in the first round and he spent three years learning from Brett and watching him.ā€

I have watched Favre my whole life, and I don’t think I am capable enough to lead the Packer team. You don’t want to mess with the nucleus that almost got a team to the Super Bowl a year before. What if the Patriots changed quarterbacks, would they be as dominated as they are? Manning not being under center for the Colts changes everything. Your quarterback is basically the center of your team. A quarterback can make or break a team. Right now the Favre soap opera is sure breaking a team that could be the next Super Bowl champions.

The Packers have above average wide receivers, a great combination of running backs, an offensive line that has been showing some progress over the past years, but no quarterback. Their secondary is one of the best in the league, their line backing core is young and fierce, and their defensive line can make some havoc. Can I say again, no quarterback?

If Favre comes to training camp, which he clams, he will have to compete with Rodgers for the starting job. The Packers claim they will have Favre practice with the second team. Lets be serious, that is like seeing Brady, or both Manning brothers on the second string of their team. The object of the game is to put your best players that you have on the field when they are available. Rodger’s feelings may be hurt but heck it’s a business. No hard feelings. That is what happens, players get traded or released. Just like Favre is a better quarterback. No hard feelings.

Packers are talking with other teams to try to move Favre, which seems reasonable for the Hall of Famer. If he is the best quarterback in the market he should be playing for a team. The Packers don’t want to face him twice a year, which explains why they are trying their hardest to keep him away from Minnesota, a team that is one quarterback away to winning a Super Bowl. Jets, Bucks, and a few other teams have been rumored. Not shocking that Favre is popular. The question is what to give up for the 38 year old.

Former star wide receiver and ESPN analyst Chris Carter summed up the problem perfectly in one sentence. Maybe the front office of Greenbay should listen up to the point Carter made. When asked if Favre is worth a first round pick, Carter asked a question of his own.

ā€œIf he is worth a first round pick, why isn’t he your starting quarterback,ā€ said Carter.

Rogers may become another Manning, Eli that is, and overcome the odds and win a championship, but those odds aren’t now. We live for the moment not tomorrow. Haven’t the packers ever heard tomorrow isn’t promised. So take advantage of a Hall of Fame quarterback and play him. This can actually haunt a franchise for years if the wrong move is made.
