2010 FIFA World Cup: Team USA Pulls out a Remarkable Win over Algeria
Do you believe in miracles?
It was every soccer fanatic's dream come true.
With their run in the 2010 World Cup on the line, Team USA pulled out a last-minute goal in stoppage time to defeat Algeria and advance past pool play.
It was a game full of missed chances, unreasonable penalties, and outrageous plays that kept every American fan on the edge of their seat.
U.S. goalie Tim Howard almost let one sneak by early on in the first five minutes of the game when Algeria hit the crossbar, giving the U.S. a premature heart attack.
Controversy erupted for Team USA once again when forward Clint Dempsey's goal was disallowed due to an offsides call around the 20-minute mark.
TV replays clearly showed that Dempsey was onsides, angering American players and fans alike for their second disallowed goal in the tournament.
Recovering from the horrible call was made even more difficult for Team USA when England scored in their game against Slovenia.
According to the pool standings, if England won their match, the U.S. had to win as well.
The pressure was on. After continuous missed chances all the way through, Team USA's chances seemed slim when the game entered its final 10 minutes.
Four minutes of stoppage time began after the 90-minute mark elapsed.
Thank God for stoppage time.
At the 91-minute mark, four-time World Cup competitor Landon Donovan hit a well-deserved shot that flew into the back of the net, granting every hope and wish of the American players and fans.
The extraordinary last-minute goal made all the difference, and Team USA was able to advance to the Sweet 16 of the World Cup.
The U.S. finished first in their pool with five points and no losses.
England also advanced from Group C with their 1-0 win over Slovenia this morning.
