College Football Playoff National Championship: Head Coaches News Conference

News: Arizona State quarterback prospect Steven Threet had a woeful scrimmage, completing only nine of 27 passes for 117 yards and three interceptions.

CFG Analysis: With Arizona State turning to a more pass-heavy offense, fantasy zealots WANT someone to emerge at QB for the Sun Devils, but it hasn’t happened yet.  Threet and Brock Osweiler will continue to battle for the job this August.

Auburn

News: With spring game in the books, the quarterback situation is still in the air. Both quarterbacks played well and showed their own strong points.

CFG Analysis: The coaches won’t make a decision until fall camp on who will start. This does hurt Cameron Newton a little. If he could separate himself in the spring, then it would be more likely that Newton could avoid split snaps.

BYU

News: Star running back Harvey Unga’s hopes of returning to play football for BYU in his senior season rests in the hands of his church leaders and the school’s administration, coach Bronco Mendenhall said Wednesday. Acknowledging that Unga wants to return to the team “in the most desperate way,” Mendenhall said he would welcome the senior-to-be back, but that it won’t be his decision.

CFG Analysis: The way this story is playing out, it wouldn’t surprise us to see Unga back in uniform by this summer.

Cincinatti

News: Cincinnati quarterback Zach Collaros went 18 for 20 for 218 yards and two scores in the Bearcats’ spring game.

CFG Analysis: No surprise here. We think Collaros is a Top 10 fantasy QB in All-120 leagues.

Hawaii

News: Per the Honolulu Advertiser.com, Hawaii quarterback Bryant Moniz said he expects to miss the rest of spring training, but hopes to rejoin the Warriors this summer. He has been on personal leave since April 8, and has not practiced nor worked out with the team since then.

CFG Analysis: Moniz is a big time fantasy factor. We’ll be watching this one closely this summer.

Houston

News: Houston wide receiver James Cleveland will miss the team’s spring game as he continues to recuperate from shoulder surgery.

CFG Analysis: This is not supposed to affect his playing status this fall. Cleveland is a Top 5 fantasy wide receiver.

News: Houston wide receiver Kierrie Johnson looked great in the spring game, hauling in seven passes for 150 yards and two scores.

CFG Analysis: Johnson figures to start the season as UH’s fourth wideout behind James Cleveland, Tyron Carrier and Patrick Edwards. If one of the Big Three was to go down to injury this season, Johnson could be a great waiver wire pickup.

Idaho

News: After having massive losses at the receiver position, the coaches turned to junior college transfer Armauni Johnson. Johnson showed his ability to step right in during the spring game, hauling in seven receptions for 103 yards and one touchdowns.

CFG Analysis: Idaho has a strong passing game with a returning quarterback. You can expect to see Johnson as the main pass target, meaning his fantasy value as a sleeper is on the rise.

Kansas State

News: Kansas State quarterback Carson Coffman went bonkers in their spring game, tossing seven touchdowns and 440 yards.

CFG Analysis: Don’t get too excited about Coffman just yet. The entire KSU team passed for seven touchdowns all of last season. Consider him a deep sleeper in BCS-only leagues. If you do believe in Coffman, then you’ll also need to put wide receiver Broderick Smith on your draft board. He led the team with a dozen catches in the spring game.

North Carolina State

News: In their spring game, NC State quarterback Mike Glennon was 21-for-38 for 423 yards and three touchdowns. Receiver Owen Spencer caught four passes for 165 yards, including a 93-yard touchdown.

CFG Analysis: Glennon is a nice backup if Russell Wilson does indeed choose the baseball diamond over the gridiron this fall. Spencer is a quality fantasy option in BCS-only leagues.

News: According to a Raleigh police search warrant, four N.C. State football players were in a College Inn apartment where police found marijuana and drug paraphernalia early Saturday morning. Wolfpack defensive tackle Justin Sweezy, offensive lineman Jake Vermiglio, defensive tackle Marcus Kuhn and tight end George Bryan were identified in the warrant.

CFG Analysis: George Bryan is a Top 10 fantasy tight end. We’ll see if he receives any serious punishment here.

Northwestern

News: Northwestern running back situation is one to watch this August. The front runner for landing the starting gig might be Arby Fields.

According to dailynorthwestern.com: “Coach is saying now that he wants one guy,” Fields said. “He’s looking for one guy to carry the load and to take over the running back spot. That’s been my goal the whole spring—to be that guy.”

CFG Analysis: Northwestern has churned out multiple fantasy stud RBs over the past decade. This situation is worth watching, and we think Fields has the best chance to break through from the pack and make a fantasy impact.

Notre Dame

News: True freshman receiver Tai-ler Jones continues to impress the new coaching staff as he makes his mark in the offense. Jones had four receptions for 56 yards and one touchdown in the spring game.

CFG Analysis: Michael Floyd is the solid No. 1 receiver, but there is competition to see who the No. 2 guy is. Jones is showing the type of play that the coaches want, making him a strong possibility to become the No. 2 receiver this fall.

South Florida

News: B.J. Daniels completed 23 of 31 passes for 381 yards and five touchdowns in USF’s spring game. Receiver Dontavia Bogan was Daniels’ favorite target, catching nine balls for 228 yards and four scores. That included a 77-yard bomb in the first quarter.

CFG Analysis: Daniels has been donning the no-contact jersey all spring as he continues to rehab from shoulder surgery. If the spring game is any indication, it looks like his shoulder is able to throw the pigskin just fine thus far. Dontavia Bogan is a name to stash away.

News: South Florida WR AJ Love torn his ACL and will be lost for the 2010 season. This is a big blow to the Bulls as Love was expected to be the top receiving threat for BJ Daniels.

CFG Analysis: This is a big blow to the Bulls as Love was expected to be the top receiving threat for BJ Daniels.

Rutgers

News: Rutgers running back Joe Martinek rushed for 116 yards on 18 carries in the Scarlet Knights spring game.

CFG Analysis: Martinek figures to be the top fantasy RB prospect for Rutgers this fall, but he does face competition. If he can secure the No. 1 role, he will be a productive fantasy option.

Syracuse

News: Syracuse has suspended running back Delone Carter from both the team and class. No word yet on when he could be back in school, but he is appealing the decision.

CFG Analysis:
Carter is the only Syracuse player on our fantasy radar as a possible late round draft pick in BCS-only leagues.

Texas

News: Texas running back Vondrell McGee was charged with a DUI and will be suspended for at least the opener, according to head coach Mack Brown.

CFG Analysis: The Texas running back situation has been very fantasy unfriendly in recent years. This news does nothing to change that status.

Utah

News: Utah head coach had some interesting things to say about his running back situation. “We feel very good about our stable of backs,” Whittingham said during the Mountain West coaches teleconference this week. “We’ll get Matt added with Eddie Wide and Sausan Shakerin, who had a tremendous spring. He’s a guy that we’ve been excited about since he got on campus. This is his year that we feel like he can be a major contributor.

CFG Analysis: Eddie Wide is still the favorite to get the bulk of the carries, but I suppose we won’t get much clarity on this situation until Matt Asiata is back in the fold this August. Stay tuned.

Utah State

News: The surprise performance of the spring game came from wide receiver Stanley Morrison. Morrison displayed his dual-threat ability rushing three times for 88 yards with one touchdown, as well as catching three passes for 35 yards and another touchdown.

CFG Analysis: If the coaches decide to put the ball in the air more and provide Morrison enough touches, he could become a decent sleeper candidate.

Washington

News: Washington wide receiver Jermaine Kearse caught six balls for 103 yards and a score in a recent scrimmage.

CFG Analysis: Kearse figures to be an underrated fantasy WR prospect and is well worth drafting, especially in BCS-only leagues.
