Quick Hitters - April 3rd

AUBURN

News: Saturday’s scrimmage showcased quarterback Cameron Newton running with the first offense for the majority of the scrimmage.
CFG Analysis: As Newton continues to impress with the starting offense, it becomes more evident that he should emerge as the starter come fall.

COLORADO

News: Head coach Dan Hawkins has stated that he wants to find ways to utilize running back Rodney Stewart in a large role for 2010. “You always want to get the ball to your playmakers, so we try, whether you want to hand it to him or throw it to him… He’s good with the ball in his hands, so we’ll try to get the ball to him,” Hawkins explained.
CFG Analysis: There are only so many workhorse backs out there, and Stewart will be one to target on draft day.

FLORIDA

News: The coaches appear to employ a two quarterback system like the Gators used when Tim Tebow was a freshman. John Brantley will be used as the primary quarterback, while Jordan Reed may be used as the third and short option for the single-wing offense.
CFG Analysis: This news does impact the fantasy value to John Brantley, while Reed’s value increases. Brantley struggled in Saturday’s scrimmage while Reed and true freshman Trey Burton had good performances.

News: After missing time due to an ankle injury, running back Emmanuel Moody left Saturday’s practice with a quadriceps injury.
CFG Analysis: It will be difficult for Moody to emerge as a fantasy option when he continues to miss time due to injury.

FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL

News: After the tragic loss of Kendall Berry (stabbing), someone will be needed to step into the starting running back role. It appears that the Syracuse transfer, Jeremiah Harden, is beginning to emerge as the main man in the backfield.
CFG Analysis: Harden has shown nice flashes this spring. Its still too early to tell if you should add his name to your draft day sleeper list.

KANSAS STATE

News: From the Topeka Capital-Journal: Chris Harper, the highly-touted transfer from Oregon, will play exclusively at receiver. Coach Bill Snyder limited the quarterback conversation to Coffman, Lamur and Klein.
CFG Analysis: Surprise!  Harper was thought to be a factor in the QB battle. Sounds like he will get a look at WR first.

KENTUCKY

News: New head coach Joker Phillips has opened up the quarterback job as an open competition between Morgan Newton, Mike Hartline, and Ryan Mossakowski.
CFG Analysis: Coach Phillips has mentioned that the competition may last into fall camp. Although we believe that Morgan Newton should hang onto his starting job, this situation will require monitoring. As of right now, ESPN blogger Chris Low has been reporting that Hartline is leading the group.

MICHIGAN

News: The coaches aren’t ready to name a starting running back just yet, but it is becoming apparent that Fitzgerald Tousaint has been making waves this spring. He is beginning to emerge as a top candidate for the starting job.
CFG Analysis: We will need more time on this one, but don’t be surprised if Tousaint is getting a heavy workload in the fall.

NORTH TEXAS

News: North Texas’ Riley Dodge has moved from quarterback to wide receiver because of recurring problems with his throwing arm. UNT Coach Todd Dodge said the decision was made after an MRI this week revealed damage to the ulnar nerve in his son’s right elbow, the residual effect of two serious arm injuries in the last three years.
CFG Analysis: Riley Dodge was never able to realize his fantasy potential at QB.

OKLAHOMA

News: Oklahoma running back Jermie Calhoun had a huge day in last Saturday’s scrimmage, totaling three touchdowns.
CFG Analysis: With the never ending string of injuries that have plagued running back DeMarco Murray, Calhoun will have plenty of chances to impress this fall. But he will have to beat out a very impressive Mossis Madu for the second string position. We could see a three headed monster at running back this year for the Sooners.

OLE MISS

News: Redshirt freshman receiver Ja-Mes Logan has had a breakout spring. His performance has even caught the eye of the coaching staff.
CFG Analysis: With the wide receiver position up for grabs, any player that can emerge as the primary target will become a sleeper candidate in BCS leagues.

PURDUE

News: With Purdue running back Ralph Bolden out with a torn ACL, sophomore Al-Terek McBurse is in line to become the Boilers’ feature back this fall.
CFG Analysis: McBurse is going to be a popular pick in BCS-only leagues. But don’t count out Keith Carlos’ big play ability to create a split carry situation.

SOUTH CAROLINA

News: There has been one major theme that has dominated the headlines of articles covering South Carolina spring football: Spurrier isn’t happy with quarterback Stephen Garcia. Garcia is not being named the clear-cut starter, and Connor Shaw is getting more and more of a look by the coaches.
CFG Analysis: This season looks to be like the last one for Garcia’s fantasy value. High expectations for what he “could” do, but reality will end up being too low for him to make much of fantasy impact. It might be best to just avoid him altogether come draft day.

SOUTH FLORIDA

News: Star quarterback B.J. Daniels will be able to participate in the team’s spring game. Daniels has missed time this spring while recovering from a shoulder injury. Daniels will be super-duper no contact during the spring game.
CFG Analysis: This is good news, since it will give us a look into how Daniels is making the transition into the new offensive scheme.

TENNESSEE

News:  Quarterback Nick Stephens has been watching his snaps with the first offense grow smaller and smaller as the spring has progressed. He recently decided that he isn’t being given the chance to be the team’s starting quarterback and has decided to transfer to another school. This leaves the QB battle down to two candidates: Matt Simms and Tyler Bray.
CFG Analysis: So far this spring Simms has received more snaps than Bray has. The spring game will be very telling as to who emerges the starter.

TEXAS TECH

News: Texas Tech senior quarterback Taylor Potts will have surgery on his throwing hand and miss eight weeks. The damage to Potts’ hand, after he hit a teammate’s helmet on the follow-through of a pass last week, was worse than originally believed. The surgery will fix ligament damage, keeping him out for the remainder of the spring.
CFG Analysis: The bad news continues to flow out of Lubbock.  However, it’s only April and both Sheffield and Potts should be ready to compete for the starting job in August.

UCLA

News: The Bruins were expecting big things from Colorado transfer receiver Josh Smith. Smith suffered a torn PCL and will have to miss the remainder of the spring.
CFG Analysis: Even if Smith must need surgery, he should be able to rejoin the team in time for summer workouts. Losing these reps in the spring definitely hurts his development in the Neuheisel offense.

UTEP

News: From ESPN.com: Texas El-Paso starting quarterback Trevor Vittatoe missed the first six practices of spring football because of suspension, and on Tuesday, the day he was set to return, UTEP announced that Vittatoe’s spring was over before it even began. Vittatoe had minor surgery on his throwing shoulder this past weekend, which will keep him out six weeks and cause him to miss the rest of spring practices.
CFG Analysis: With a suspension and now this, Vitt has had a rough off-season.
