After Drafting Jesus, The Denver Broncos Find His Apostles

Reid BrooksApr 23, 2010

Let me start by saying this:

It is a rare occasion when a writer gets to say he was truly the only one reporting something incredibly difficult to predict, would actually occur.

An hour before the draft, I released an article stating that the Denver Broncos WOULD trade down and that they WOULD draft Tim Tebow.Ā  Without equivocation.

I ended it with the statement "expect this stuff to pan out," and it did.

You can see the remarkable article that bested anything being written by anyone at a Denver affiliated newspaper or national sports news association (ESPN, FOX, CBS) here:

Many people have started there articles about Tim Tebow's draft situation with lines like, "No one could have seen it coming!"

Really?

I wrote that it was coming.

This article is the first follow up I have made to that, and honestly, I am glad that I waited until after the second day of the draft.

Some commentators have rushed to judgement on Tim Tebow, saying "Josh McDaniels' career as a coach will rest on Tim's semi-divine, Herculean shoulders." Ā I on the other hand couldn't disagree more.

McDaniels went out of his way this draft to rebuild the offense he had previously dismantled.

Zane Beadles is an excellent pick to strengthen the interior of the Denver Broncos' line, and did I mention he is a rather large fellow?

He is.

Beadles will be an immediate starter, as will J.D. Walton, who some (myself included) had suggested would make for a great option at Center if available in the third (which I doubted at the time, but McDaniels looks like a genius for not rushing after Maurkice Pouncey with that type of value on Walton).

If anyone was worried about the strength of the Denver Broncos' offensive line, know that it has been reinvigorated, and will continue to frustrate defensive coordinators as one of the premier fronts in the NFL.

But more importantly, Josh McDaniels sought out, and found, two extremely valuable receivers.

The Broncos were short on talent at the position before trading away Brandon Marshall, and now, they have two of the premier talents from this draft.

Demaryius Thomas has been described as "reminiscent of Brandon Marshall," only faster and better at a younger age.

Eric Decker, from Minnesota, had been sought out by Peyton Manning (as the story goes on campus) and heavily endorsed as a mid-round pick by the offensive guru.

Josh McDaniels ignored the defense, knowing that it was a premier unit last season. He instead was in favor of massively upgrading his offense.

The way I see it, his career rests more in the hands of Thomas and Decker than in Tebow.

McDaniels hedged his bets on quarterbacks.Ā  In the past two years, he has added four to the roster, and each one has initially been described as "his new project."

Someone is going to work out.Ā  It may be Tebow, or Tebow might be a fullback, but someone is going to work out as the quarterback of the Denver Broncos.

Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker?Ā  Well they're the replacements.

They'll be expected to fill in offensively for what Tony Scheffler and Brandon Marshall were, during the Mike Shannahan/Jay Cutler era in Denver.

And no, Brandon Stokely and Jabar Gaffney do not count as backups to their roles.

Knowshon Moreno is the most secure part of the offense it seems, as McDaniels' personal ordained prophet before Jesus strolled into town.Ā  And the funniest part about the situation?Ā  Everyone is talking about Tim like he is the make-or-break piece of the offense.

I expect Tim Tebow to be a leader in the locker room and on the field.Ā  As a voice and face, he likely will be in the forefront of the Broncos organization until a new coach comes in four years from now and trades him to Chicago.

But is Tim Tebow Josh McDaniels' actual savior?

I doubt it.

All Tebow will do is show up, add some flair, probably make some cool plays on occasion and give great pep-talks.

This season he'll be thrown in as a "Wild Horses" option.

I have no reason to think that Tim Tebow is the long term solution for the Broncos, because Josh McDaniels has amassed a history of playing with a new quarterback on a yearly basis, and for the past two years he has gone after two quarterbacks (yearly).

Last week, Brady Quinn was going to be fixed and turned into the future of the Denver Broncos' franchise.Ā  This week it is Tim Tebow.Ā  Two years from now, it could be Matt Barkley.

What is concrete in the Broncos future is this:

If Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker, Zane Beadles, and J.D. Walton aren't what they're built up to be, McDaniels will be out of Denver before he gets a chance to rotate through a couple more quarterbacks.

And everyone knows how fast that happens.

I for one feel strangely good about these prospects.Ā  This draft didn't end up being an Alphonso Smith/Richard Quinn confused mess.Ā  Josh really sealed some things up with his round two and round three selections.

No folks, I'll say it one more time.Ā  I'm not sold on any of Denver's quarterbacks, no matter who is billed to be the savior of Mile High, but I sure am happy with the apostles.

Expect this stuff to pan out.Ā  The Denver Broncos have an offense again.

*The title of this is a reference to the hilarious, sports-comedian Gene Collier and a story he tells about a mock draft that he and his friends did (where you could draft anyone who ever lived).Ā  I'd recommend looking for him on Youtube if you get a chance.
