2010 NFL Draft: San Francisco 49ers Will Have Many Good Choices

Andrew GardaApr 22, 2010

I've spent the last two weeks essentially hiding in a bunker getting ready to hit the floor at Radio City Music Hall as credentialed media.

If you want to follow what I am doing, check out ThunderingBlurb.com tonight and all weekend as I will throw up a bunch of posts and video live from Radio City. You can also find me on Twitter by following @thunderingblurb .

It's a lot to work up to but I've been carefully watching the 49ers as they dance the draft dance and thought I would share my thoughts going into the evening.

The 49ers continue to be in the cat-bird seat as far as I am concerned. Reports are all over the place in terms of who will fall where and which teams are desperately trying to trade up before the end of round one.

For the Niners, it's really very simple. Take the best pick available who fits a high position of need.

By trading for Ted Ginn Jr, the team has eliminated any pressure to grab a guy like C.J. Spiller. If they want to add a running back, there are plenty more at lesser cost and Spiller's biggest attraction was a kick returner.

The team continues to need to focus on the offensive line, the secondary, and linebacker.

There will be ample targets to look at with the 13th and 17th picks.

There is every chance a guy like Anthony Davis slips. And if he doesn't Mike Iupati would fill a guard spot they need to enhance as well. If not, a cornerback like Joe Haden could be a fine fit for this defense.

Of course, he might be there at 17 as well. Another option for the second of two picks, if say they take Haden first, could be another Florida Gator in the form of Maurkice Pouncey.

By far the best center in the draft, some Niner fans might choke on their dinner, but we have to remember that virtually the entire offensive line needs help. He could start out as guard as well, then transition to center if they wanted him to.

It may seem high for a center (even if he is a guard for a while) but I'm always of a mind that if you have the need and the player is there, take him.

They could be tempted with a player like Tennessee DT Dan Williams or hybrid DE/OLB Sergio Kindle. Both strike me as very much Singletary's type of guy even if Kindle has had his share of off-the-field issues.

You may notice one name I haven't mentioned: Jimmy Clausen. There have been some persistent rumors that Clausen could drop out of the top ten and if so, land in the 49ers lap.

Would they take him? They've been adamant that Alex Smith is their guy this year. Quarterback is a need—but not considered by many to be a high priority need.

Neither was wide receiver in 2009's draft. And yet when Michael Crabtree fell to them at the 10th pick they pulled the trigger.

I don't know how high Clausen is on the team's draft board. Whether a team actually brings a prospect in or not is no great read on whether they will draft him.

Some teams never bring in the top prospects on their boards. Some bring everyone they love in. Some only bring in guys for medical checks. Some only to round out their sheets on a prospect and close the book.

What I do know is that if he's there and the team likes him, he's a 49er. If he is high enough on the teams draft board, they will take him, just like Crabtree last year.

This is the flexibility of their two picks. They can pretty much go in any direction and roll with whatever value they see. The can pick value as they want or listen to trade offers.

They are in control and their options are many. I'm excited to be there tonight to see what they do.
