No Need To Be Surprised; Jerry Is Just Being Jerry

Derek MajorApr 14, 2010

When I woke up this morning and looked at the morning headlines and saw what Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had done, I wasn't shocked, upset, or angry. Instead I thought to myself, hmmm this sounds about right.

Now when I say this sound right, I'm not talking about what he said about Tony Romo or Bill Parcells. I'm talking about Jones taking credit for someone else's work. This is nothing new when it comes to Jones, so if you're shocked or surprised, don't be. It's just Jerry being Jerry.Ā

We're talking about a guy who has always thought he was smarter than everyone else and in some cases was right.

This is the guy who came into Dallas and ran Tom Landry out of town. Then Jones got rid of Jimmy Johnson after winning a Super Bowl, because he wanted more credit for building the Cowboys into America's Team.Ā

So why is this upsetting everyone?

Jones was right when it comes to Parcells to a certain extent. Parcells did get him headlines and Parcells definitely wasn't a yes man like the head coach before him Dave Campo was.Ā

To be honest when it comes to Parcells, he's a great no nonsense coach. He comes in and pisses everyone off, until they start winning. Then eventually they stop winning and he pisses everyone off even more.

He's like that girlfriend you always argue and fight with, but when you guys make up it's so great you'll so through the fighting just to do it again and again and again.

It was Parcells who kept Romo around and developed him and put him in for Drew Bledsoe, ending the QB carousel in Dallas that included Vinny Testaverde, Quincy Carter, Drew Henson, and last (and definitely least) Ryan Leaf.Ā

Jones was also right about Tim Tebow. If Dallas did draft him it's not like he would overtake Romo at some point in the next three years at QB unless Romo got hurt, and to be honest I think Tebow is a backup at best in the NFL.Ā

However, Jones (albeit drunk) felt the need to once again give himself credit for everything he didn't do. He did the same thing when the Cowboys won their third Super Bowl under Barry Switzer and last season.

When Jones didn't fire Phillips although everyone (me included) was calling for it, he saw an opportunity. That's why Jones had that "I told you so" look on his face every time the FOX cameras showed him in the owners booth as the Cowboys pounded the Eagles for two straight weeks on their way to the NFC East title and a wild card win. Ā

This has been the Jerry Jones we've all come to know and love for years. So don't bash him or call him out now, because this is something he's been doing since he got to Dallas and after this all is what owners do; take credit for things they didn't do.Ā
