2010 NBA Draft: Who Can Help the Warriors the Most, Part 3 and Summary.
Sometimes I ask myself why I write these articles when, on my week off, I could be putting a dent in my goals for my ideal world. Maybe I can't surf all day, but the weather's still good enough that I can go now, but it's an hour and I don't wanna drive. And I'm too lazy to get a real job.
With that insight into my boring-ass life, here's the final instalment of the 2010 NBA Draft Chronicles, and who would help the Warriors the most. While I'm only looking at one player for this article, the second part will consist of a summary of Parts 1, 2 and 3, and my judgement on who will benefit Golden State the most.
Al-Farouq Aminu
I admit, I had somewhat overlooked Aminu until I began to look into him a bit further. 6'8" and 210, can play both forward positions with a 16/10 average. All very nice.
Aminu is one of the best slashers in this draft—he's extremely good at getting to the free throw line, even if he could do with some improvement on his 70% success rate from the charity stripe. However, his offensive game in most other regards, leaves a bit to be desired—his jumper from all areas is pretty dodgy (especially off the dribble and from 3 point range), his ball-handling gets a Could Do Much Better, and despite his ability to get to the rim, his finishing in that area could improve. The promising thing in this regard is he has a lot of upside, so how much he improves in this regard is up to him and the coaching staff. Once again, you worry a little about how he might fare under Don Nelson, but then again, like Derrick Favors, he's the kind of guy who probably could use some fine-tuning in the gym for a while.
Defensively, Aminu is far better developed. Already his size and length provides mismatch potential, and he shows considerable commitment on the defensive end. Once again, while he's probably not ready to lock down the LeBrons or Durants consistently, with time he should develop into a guy who can do so. Plus, he's supposed to be an excellent pick-and-roll defender.
However, at this stage it's hard to see him becoming a lot more than a poor man's Corey Maggette on offense. Considering the amount of emphasis Nellie Ball places on this element of the game, and that Aminu would most likely be an undersized power forward for the Dubs at this stage, you have to wonder where he fits into this team right now.
Verdict: It's hard to ignore potential like what Aminu has, and if you were willing to draft purely on potential you'd have to say he'd be worth it if we missed out on a higher pick. However, if you're looking to draft for need, he doesn't really fit the Warriors at this stage. I'd say let him go, unless management are willing to gamble and we miss out on our other targets.
So now that I've finished the analysis, how do I think the Warriors should draft?
As we can't fall lower than sixth, I decided to summarize what we should do at each position. Remember, this is based not just on what I believe the Warriors should do but also on various mock drafts predicting what other teams above us might do.
1st: Evan Turner
2nd: Evan Turner
3rd: Derrick Favors
4th: Wesley Johnson
5th: Wesley Johnson
6th: Al-Farouq Aminu
Well, that's that. Now if you will excuse me, I'm off to the beach.
