Why Are TNA's Ratings Dropping On Monday Nights?

The Doctor Chris MuellerMar 31, 2010

TNA recently moved to Monday nights in order to compete directly with the WWE, and now it's clear that this may have been a mistake.

Since their January 4th Monday night broadcast, and each Monday that followed, TNA has seen a steady drop in their ratings.

This could be due to many people who watched both companies preferring WWE when forced to choose, and it could be that TNA has lost what set them apart from WWE in the first place.

I have been a supporter of TNA for a long time. I always felt they brought something different to the world of pro wrestling, but now it seems as if they are trying to be more like WWE, which, in turn, is hurting them.

By signing a ton of former WWE wrestlers, TNA has essentially become WWE lite. With old dogs like Hogan Bischoff running the show, we are not seeing the originality that was once TNA.

Once they got rid of the six-sided ring, I knew they were heading down a slippery slope. Having had plenty of surprises for their first couple Monday night shows, TNA has settled back into a normal pace, and that pace is slower than TNA fans are used to.

While TNA can be praised for featuring AJ Styles as champion and pushing guys like Desmond Wolfe, The Pope, and Eric Young, they can also be criticized for having an NWO reunion with guys who can barely run let alone wrestle anymore.

I am hoping that TNA adds a second weekly show so they can feature more of its great talent on a regular basis.

Anyone who saw the interaction between Jay Lethal and Hogan on Monday had to have laughed a little.  Lethal's Black Machismo gimmick has not been seen as much on television since Hogan took over, but it would appear TNA has plans for him after all.

I expected the likes of Jeff Hardy and RVD to bring in big ratings, but alas, I was wrong. TNA has done a good job of spending money lately, now they just need to learn how to make it.

Three things can be done to help TNA.

1.  Have a second weekly show

2.  Have the show go on tour instead of take place on a sound stage

3.  Get rid of the new NWO

By doing these things, TNA can begin to show what they are really capable of, but until then iMPACT will just feel like WCW Saturday Night.
