SEC Surprises To Get Ready For Chapter Two
Larry Burton (Panama City Beach, Fl) Once the SEC season is underway and you see a blur in an Ole Miss Jersey swallow up and slam your quarterback to the ground, you won't have to ask who that is after reading this article.
His name is Wayne Dorsey, and he is a monster at 6-8 and 250 pounds. And that is without his winter weight training that may add on even more pounds of muscle. So how did your school miss this guy and where does he come from?
It's actually a curious route. He played high school ball in Baltimore and was initially set to sign and play for Virginia Tech in 2007, but there were problems with the NCAA clearinghouse, so he went to a prep school in New York, Milford Academy.
The University of Minnesota came calling but there were more clearinghouse issues, so he decided to go the JUCO route and enrolled at Mississippi Gulf Coast College in Gulfport, Mississippi. This is the same school that Alabama snagged Terrence (Mt.) Cody from.
There he flourished as a defensive end standout while getting all his grades in order and getting set for a December graduation that would allow him to enroll in January with the school of his choice and start winter and spring training.
With two years of eligibility left, many schools came calling. Among them were Mississippi State, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Florida State. Ole Miss ended up the eventual winner and will reap the rewards.
This is a total athlete not to be confused with the typical defensive lineman stereotype. He was also a standout basketball player and could have easily gone that route as well. At 6-8 already, you can imagine his ability to bat down passes with his incredible vertical leaping ability.
He's also fast, and most quarterbacks will not be able to elude him in a pass scramble or rush.
He should be a starter from day one, both given the graduation of Rebel defensive ends and his athletic ability. He should wind up an All SEC Defensive End before his career is over.
This is the second in a series of articles that will prepare you for the new names, faces, and players that will become news in the SEC over the coming season. You can find others as they are written at http://bleacherreport.com/users/56155-larry-burton
