Chicago Bears Should Go with Mike Tice and Rod Marinelli as Coordinators

After losing out on yet another potential coaching target—the Ravens' Hue Jackson signed on with Oakland today—the Bears might as well just stay internal for their offensive and defensive coordinator positions.

It's getting sort of ridiculous at this point, and they have two seemingly capable guys in house already, so what's the harm?

Let me tell you, after experiencing the Super Bowl Shuffle those many years ago, this Coaching Shuffle pales in comparison.

One has to wonder just how much of a difference the unnamed coordinators will be anyway.

We know the defense belongs to Lovie Smith, so the signal caller probably won't make much of an impact. And Rod Marinelli has been there, done that.

Meanwhile, Mike Tice, like Marinelli, has been a head coach, so he has called plays and is battle-tested.

Look, Tice and Marinelli may not be perfect candidates, but that ship has sailed already, so why not?

Maybe an insecure Smith is afraid to give someone with former head coaching experience that much authority, who knows?

I do know this: With Jackson off to Oakland, and Green Bay still not willing to let the Bears talk to Tom Clements, they really have no one better to turn to.

Sure, Mike Martz is still lurking around in the shadows, but if Smith wanted to hire him, wouldn't he have done so already? Perhaps Jay Cutler doesn't want him. Martz does have a reputation in some circles of being difficult to get along with.

Instead of chasing a royal flush, I suggest the Bears play the hand they've been dealt and save some face. At some point, they need to face reality, and that is the jobs are just not that attractive to anyone.

Job security is lacking, with Smith possibly packing his bags after the season, and the defensive scheme is not up for debate.

Yet, the search goes on.

Maybe they should hold a coaching telethon and donate the proceeds to Haiti. Or just have a coordinator-by-committee this season. Remember the Cubs "college of coaches"? Hey, that worked out well, didn't it?
