Indianapolis Colts To Square Off with Who Dat Nation in Super Bowl XLIV

Kevin BurkeJan 24, 2010

Super Bowl XLIV is set and it will feature two of the highest-scoring teams in the NFL in the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints. Both teams rank in the top 10 in total offense and scoring, and are centered around Pro-Bowl quarterbacks.

For the Colts, it's their second trip to the Super Bowl in the last four years. Indianapolis won Super Bowl XLI over the Bears in Miami, 29-14.

Peyton Manning led his team from an 11-point deficit to beat the upstart New York Jets 30-17, and advance to the franchise's fourth Super Bowl appearance. Manning had another huge game, with 377 yards and three touchdowns, thanks primarily to newcomers Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie.

Garcon finished the game with 151 yards and a touchdown, and Collie accumulated 123 yards and a touchdown.

The win over New York avenged an earlier loss in the season for the Colts. Things didn't seem to be going Indianapolis' way, as the Colts found themselves down 17-6 before Peyton Manning led a four-play, 80-yard drive right before the end of the first half to swing the momentum back to Indy.

After dominating the second half, the Colts secured the AFC Championship.

It was a little bit harder for the Saints, who struggled every bit of the way on their way to the first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history.

The team formerly known as the "'Aints" forced five turnovers and kicker Garrett Hartley nailed a 40-yard field goal to send New Orleans to a 31-28 overtime win over the Minnesota Vikings.

Drew Brees didn't have a statistically spectacular game, but was efficient enough to give the Saints the win. Brees finished with 197 yards and three touchdowns, one of which gave the Saints a 28-21 lead in the fourth quarter.

Statistically, the Saints were completely dominated by the Vikings. However, New Orleans recovered three fumbles and forced two Brett Favre interceptions, including one in the final minute on a questionable call by Favre. Minnesota was on the fringe of field goal range before Favre rolled out to his right and threw across his body, only to be intercepted by the Saints' Tracy Porter, giving New Orleans the ball with little time remaining.

New Orleans took the opening kick in overtime and went right down the field, setting up Hartley for the historic kick and the Saints' first NFC Championship.

As for the Super Bowl itself, it is loaded with story lines:

It's the first time since 1993 that two No. 1 seeds will meet for the title.

It's the first time two "dome teams" will meet for the title.

It's the battle of Peyton Manning playing his dad's team and the team he grew up rooting for.

It's the first time the Saints have ever been in a Super Bowl.

Most importantly though, its Peyton Manning vs. Drew Brees; two of the most prolific passers in the league today will square off in South Florida on Feb. 7.

Harrah's International has already posted the Colts as 3.5 point favorites, which essentially means that the game could go either way. The Saints have the best offense in the league, but they'll be going up against a Indianapolis defense that allows less than 20 points per game.

On the flip side, the Colts have the seventh-best scoring offense in the league and they may have a slight advantage, as the Saints defense ranks in the lower third of the NFL.

Then again, New Orleans forced five turnovers in their win Sunday.

Either way, this Super Bowl has potential to be one of those games that people talk about down the road. Both teams can score, and both teams are able to play enough defense to keep their teams winning.

There's a reason the Colts started 14-0 and the Saints 13-0, and it's not because of luck. It will be a fun two weeks of media hype and over-analyzing.

Luckily, none of that analysis will deal with Brett Favre.

The Colts and Saints will kickoff at approximately 6:25 p.m. on Feb. 7 from Sun Life Stadium in South Florida. CBS will have the coverage, as they did when the Colts won Super Bowl XLI.
