Brock Lesnar: Will He Fight the Shane Carwin-Frank Mir Winner First?
Brock Lesnar put his division on notice earlier this afternoon, declaring that he is back and “100 percent.”
Dana White confirmed that Lesnar will be back in action this summer and that his first adversary will most likely be the Shane Carwin-Frank Mir winner. Those two will battle it out for the interim title at UFC 111, set for Mar. 27 in Newark, New Jersey.
Barring an injury or the unforeseen, “Lesnar vs. Mir III” or “Lesnar vs. Carwin” could main event a highly anticipated Boston fight card, targeted for Aug. 28 , but not yet officially confirmed.
Another very viable option could be UFC 114, set for Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada.
UFC 114 will coincide with the organization’s second-ever fan expo. There first expo, which took place during the weekend of UFC 100, was a huge success. Pairing Lesnar’s return with the fan expo could be simply too good to pass up.
When asked about it Dana said, "Yeah, it's a possibility,"
A UFC 114 return for Lesnar would most likely shift his opponent to the winner of the Antonio Nogueira-Cain Velasquez fight. With their UFC 110 match-up set for Feb. 21 in Australia, the victor of the bout should have sufficient time to recover.
The only way the Carwin-Mir winner would make the May 29 date is if they come out of their fight unscathed and prepared for a quick two-month turnaround.
If the Mir-Carwin winner emerges as the man to fight Lesnar first, the UFC will have to decide if they want to shelve the Nogueria-Velasquez winner, possibly until the year end show, where they may want to feature a subsequent heavyweight title fight.
If the Nogueira-Velasquez winner is tapped to fight Lesnar at UFC 114, the winner of that fight would battle the Carwin-Mir winner to unify the belt, also an intriguing option for the year end show.
No matter how it plays out, the UFC will have marketable heavyweight titles fights lined up for the rest of the 2010 calendar, putting the spotlight back on the heaviest division in the sport.
