Colts vs. Jets: Oh, the Possible Irony On Sunday
I am a man who loves irony, but at the same time I have a dislike for New York Jets' Head Coach Rex Ryan. So this Sunday brings me to an interesting crossroad.
The Jets will once again travel to Indianapolis to face the Colts, a team that could have ended the Jets season nearly a month ago.
Instead, the Colts turned their nose at a possible 16-0 season and rested starters which gave the Jets life.

Then of course, the Jets went on to steamroll the Bengals, not once, but twice, because the Bengals, too, decided to rest starters (another case of irony).
For the most part it is nearly impossible to say if resting starters helps or hurts a team. There is no scientific method to prove either case. If a team rests starters at the end of the season and loses there is no saying that they wouldn't have lost if the starters played all 16 games.
Same as if that team would win the Super Bowl. You can't say if the same thing wouldn't have happened.
However, we get a special treat this season.
Had the Colts not pulled their starters in week 16 against the Jets there is a good chance they would have held their lead and won the game.
That loss coupled with the teams (who didn't make the play-offs) that won out, the Jets would not have gotten in to the postseason.
So, if the Jets win on Sunday, and with their confidence level so high it isn't impossible, we can all collectively say that the Colts resting their starters (for the Jets game) was a horrible idea.
