Cowboys-Vikings: Brett Favre Leads Minnesota to a 34-3 Victory over Dallas

Antoine RobertsJan 19, 2010

TheĀ Minnesota Vikings (13-4)Ā advanced to the NFC championship game against the New Orleans Saints (14-3)Ā after a great victory over the Dallas Cowboys this past Sunday.Ā

The 40-year-old quarterback, Brett Favre, led his team with four touchdown passes and zero interceptions.Ā He went 15-for-24 with 234 passing yards.Ā Another accomplishment Favre earned was being the first 40-year-old quarterback to win a playoff game.

"I feel like I'm playing the same way. I have the same enthusiasm," Favre said. "Today was like this season: It's been wonderful."

Favre hadn't thrown four touchdowns in any of his previous 22 playoff appearances, and he's never beaten the Cowboys after they ended his first three playoff experiences with the Green Bay Packers.

Three of Favre's touchdown passes went toĀ wide receiverĀ Sidney Rice. Rice's three touchdown catches set the Vikings' playoff record and tied the NFL record.

The Vikings' rushing attack wasn't really a big threat, being held to only 109 yards. Adrian Peterson carried the ball 26 times for 63 yards, making it a terrible day for the best running back in the NFL. Chester Taylor had four carries for 23 yards. With the way the passing game was going, the rushing game really didn't matter.

The Vikings scored a touchdown late in the game, which led to Cowboys linebacker Keith Brooking calling Vikings head coach Brad Childress "classless and disrespectful."

"It's just taking care of business," Childress responded.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo went 22-for-35 for 198 yards and one interception. He fumbled three times, losing two of them.

Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards was responsible for three of the six sacks against Romo. Romo threw an interception right to Ben Leber late in the third quarter that led to a Viking field goal. Jared Allen also had a sack and a forced fumble on Romo.

Edwards injured his knee in the third quarter, returned, and left the game as a precaution. Childress said that Edwards will play against the Saints.

With this loss to the Vikings, Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips may be fired by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Phillips has gotten the hook before, as the former coach of the Denver Broncos and the Buffalo Bills, and really hopes to keep this job.

Going into this game, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has better stats than Brett Favre, and the Saints have a better record than the Vikings. They didn't play each other during the regular season, so that should make this game much more exciting!

The Saints beat the Arizona Cardinals by 31 (45-14) and the Vikings did the same, beating the Cowboys by 31 (34-3), so this should be a high-scoring game.

Tune in Sunday, Jan. 24 at 6:40 PM to see the Vikings take on the Saints.
