Holmgren to Snyderatto: You suck!

Mark ButerbaughNov 2, 2009

Mike Holmgren, often rumored to be the next head coach/impressario of the Washington Redskins, took to the airwaves to blast team management for their treatment of Jim Zorn, an assistant coach to Holmgren in Seattle.

"On the ā€œThe Waddle and Silvy Show,ā€ Holmgren was asked by the Chicago radio hosts, Tom Waddle and Marc Silverman, what he thought about the Redskins removing the play-calling duties from head coach Jim Zorn, who was Holmgren’s quarterbacks coach in Seattle. ā€œI thought it was very unfair to put him in the position. The position they put Jim in, it shouldn’t happen,ā€ Holmgren said. ā€œYou can be upset with me as a play-caller or how the team’s going, (then) fire me. But don’t do that. Don’t pull the rug out from under me, tie my hands, make me look foolish … take away what I came there for to do in the first place. Don’t do that.ā€ ... ā€œThat bothered me a lot,ā€ Holmgren said. ā€œJim Zorn is one of the nice people. I’m a nice guy, but I’m not that nice. Jim Zorn is really a nice man. What they did, I did not like it at all.ā€"

Holmgren is obviously a very good coach to have reached 3 Super Bowls [two with the Green Bay Packers and one with the Seattle Seahawks], but he didn't impress anyone as a GM in Seattle. In other words, Redskins fans shouldn't necessarily be depressed that Holmgren might not be coming to D.C. to run the whole show. However, it is great to see yetĀ  another well-respected NFL bigshot ripping Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato for the godawful way they have handled, well, everything, this season. Cerrato will clearly do anything to hang on to a job he couldn't get in with any other NFL team, but by now it must be dawning on even a blockhead like Snyder that pretty much nobody who isn't on his payroll will say anything publicly to defend him. Will it jolt Snyder into doing what he has tried to avoid doing for years -- hand over team management to a respected outside personnel expert? Who knows? I'm not holding my breath.
