49ers Are Still Several Players Away From Greatness

I'm not going to go on some long dissertation about the 49ers woes. Fans know the issues. But there are key positions that are lacking with the 49ers and the most glaring is QB.

Now I know Mike Singletary is a smashmouth football proponent. Run, run and more run, and with a healthy Frank Gore and an 'o' line that opens big holes like they did in September, then I can get behind that. But when Gore's not healthy, we see what October has brought...mediocrity. And to me, that shows the real weakness on offense. No real leader behind center. Shaun Hill, as a starter is 10-6 now for the Niners, he's great at handing off the ball. But we're is the long ball threat? Hill looks so uncomfortable throwing the long ball! Opposing defenses know that the Niners are a one trick pony on offense and they are shutting it down as of late. Vernon Davis is showing up, but again, the weapons on offense are few and far between. Davis and Gore, period. Gore goes out...Davis. Davis goes out...zero! Hill is not a threat, hence his benching. What does that show you? The 49er braintrust has no confidence in Hill to really more the 'O'!

So here's what needs to happen from this fan's perspective. Hill, Davis and Smith are not going to get it done. Where's the real leader at QB? Where's the real seasoned pro? And where's the real long threat? Crabtree is yet to show up. Vernon Davis is good, but is he the long threat? Not in the Jerry Rice mold. And we haven't even started talking about the 'OC'!

So while this year has started well...we're seeing the real 49ers right now. A team with no offensive soul.

Now defense is showing some soul, but like in baseball...you need to support your pitching with some offense...and right now...it ain't happening. Come on Mr. York, 'we want winners', that goes for the fans as well. 15 years is a long time to not be at the big dance.
