Report: Jason Witten Received Offer from 2nd Network; Cowboys Hopeful He Plays

There is reportedly another factor to consider as tight end Jason Witten contemplates retiring before the 2018 NFL season.

According to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, the Dallas Cowboys still hope Witten suits up this year even though he is thinking of joining the Monday Night Football broadcast team. However, Mortensen pointed out "a source says another network has made a last-minute 'interesting' proposal that is also being considered."

This comes after Mortensen reported Friday that Witten was planning on calling it quits on his NFL career to join Monday Night Football but still had a meeting scheduled with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

Jones told the Cowboys' official website Witten hadn't made a final decision.

Clarence Hill Jr. of the Star-Telegram said Witten "blindsided" the only NFL team he has ever played for during his 15 seasons with his potential retirement decision.

If this is the end of the tight end's career, he is a Hall of Fame candidate with 11 Pro Bowls and two first-team All-Pro selections on his resume. He played all 16 games every year of his career except when he appeared in 15 as a rookie and tallied 1,152 catches for 12,448 yards and 68 touchdowns.

While Witten has four seasons with more than 1,000 receiving yards, he slowed some last year with 63 catches for 560 yards and five scores.

If Witten does join the broadcast booth, he will be following in the footsteps of his former quarterback and teammate Tony Romo, who is an analyst for CBS.

It would also leave current Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott without two of his most reliable weapons in the aerial attack after the team released wide receiver Dez Bryant this offseason. Dallas selected tight end Dalton Schultz out of Stanford in the fourth round of this year's draft, but Witten is a proven playmaker with a head-turning resume.
