Daniel Bryan, Shane McMahon vs. Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn Set for WrestleMania 34
Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon will team up to take on Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn in a tag team match at WrestleMania 34 in New Orleans on April 8, it was announced by the SmackDown general manager on Tuesday.
Bryan added a stipulation that will have significant consequences for the futures of Owens and Zayn on SmackDown Live, per WWE's official Twitter account:
Zayn accepted on behalf of himself and Owens:
The fact McMahon will be involved is somewhat surprising after WWE announced Monday he had been hospitalized with diverticulitis and was being treated in New York. The SmackDown commissioner shared a photo on Instagram from the hospital Tuesday.
Bryan alluded to McMahon's health and added he "[has] good reason to believe that he'll be ready to go" at WrestleMania.
After more than two years away from in-ring action because of concussions, it was announced on March 20 that independent doctors and WWE had cleared Bryan to return to active competition.
On SmackDown Live that same night, Bryan fired Owens and Zayn after they brutally attacked McMahon one week earlier.
In response, the Yep Movement turned its attention to Bryan and assaulted him as well.
Although the SmackDown Live general manager got some shots in and held his own, the segment ended with KO giving him a vicious powerbomb onto the apron.
It represented a major change on the blue brand since Bryan had previously defended Owens and Zayn in opposition to McMahon.
The SmackDown commissioner tried to fire them on a number of occasions, but Bryan wouldn't allow it to happen since he saw much of himself in them.
Bryan and Shane-O-Mac are now on the same page, however, which sets the stage for a blockbuster match at The Showcase of the Immortals.
The biggest night of Bryan's wrestling career took place four years ago in New Orleans when he beat Triple H in the opening match of WrestleMania 30 and then went on to defeat both Randy Orton and Batista in the main event to become WWE world heavyweight champion.
He got injured shortly thereafter, and although he returned in time to win the Intercontinental Championship in a ladder match at WrestleMania 31, another injury seemingly placed him on the shelf for good.
Every indication was that Bryan would never compete in a WWE ring again when he announced his retirement in February 2016, but after getting cleared by many of the top neurologists and concussion experts in the country, he is back doing what he loves.
It isn't yet clear what the future holds for Bryan in terms of what brand he will be a part of or how frequently he will wrestle, but a tag match at WrestleMania 34 is seemingly an ideal way to get him integrated once again as an in-ring performer.
Considering Bryan's history in the Big Easy, the Superdome promises to come unglued when he makes his entrance at WrestleMania 34.
