Jeff Fisher and Eric Mangini's Severe Cases of Stubborn, Silly, and Stupid

Richard CaldwellOct 20, 2009

It's not just Jeff Fisher.  He is just one of the latest examples.  It is a bug that bites many a coach.  I don't know if it is pride, or such a strong belief that you are right that you are willing to hope against hope that your point will be proven publicly.  However you explain it, what it amounts to is a stubbornness that is silly and stupid.

Eric Mangini is another current example of this disease.

Case No. 1—Jeff Fisher.  Jeff, I don't know if you have noticed or not, but you are winless. That's right, not one single win.  I also don't know if you have noticed or not, but your quarterback is 37-years-old, has never been anything but up and down from season to season, has almost no mobility and completed two passes for negative seven yards last week.  Hmmmm. Oh yea.  You have a former 1st round draft pick, who was the rookie of the year, who guided your team to the playoffs not too long ago, sitting on the bench. Jeff, you are WINLESS.  Get it?  There is nothing to be gained by playing Kerry Collins.  Get it? Even your owner is calling for a change.  Get it?  You can't get worse than 59-0.  Get it? If you trot out Kerry Collins in two weeks you will demonstrate that you are a genuine carrier of the S1S1S1 virus.  Stubborn one, silly one, stupid one.

Case No. 2—Eric Mangini.  Or, as his detractors like to refer to him, Mangenius.  I wonder why they call him that?  Anyway, I see evidence of the beginning symptoms of the S1S1S1 virus in him as well.  Eric, did you notice that you gave your former first round pick, Brady Quinn, only 10 quarters to play as a starter this season?  Eric did you notice that Quinn was playing against some teams in those games that have proven to have some pretty good defenses?  Eric, did you notice that the guy you are in love with (apparently), "D.A" as you love to call him, "is what he is" as Bill Parcells used to say? Derek Anderson is a guy who has a strong arm, but no accuracy.  Derek Anderson is a guy who can look good in short stretches to look horrendous in other stretches. That is who the guy is.  Period.  Mr. Mangini, did you notice that your one win this year had your QB completing two passes?  I can't believe I am even writing this!  An NFL QB who plays an entire game, without some major weather elements involved, and he completed TWO PASSES?  Are you kidding me?  Eric, did you notice that "D.A" has completed 11 passes in his last two starts?  TOTAL?  Why do you stay with him Eric? Why do you ignore his poor performances?  Why do you ignore that inconvenient fact that he has had MULTIPLE chances to prove himself over more than one season and your former No. 1 draft pick hasn't gotten a fair shake?  Yes, you too, Mr. Mangini, have the S1S1S1 virus.  Stubborn, silly and stupid.

What may be more frustrating than watching these stubborn, silly and stupid coaches is hearing people in the media defend them.  All of the sudden every game involving Kerry Collins and Derek Anderson has "dropped ball counters".  They conveniently ignore the "air mailed ball count", or the "ground ball count".

I for one would like to see a vaccine developed for such coaches.  I would like to see an 0-6 coach, and a 1-5 coach come to their senses.  Do the smart thing.  Do the obvious thing.  Play your QB's that were taken in the 1st round.  If they fail, they fail, but in both cases what do you have to lose?  Oh yea, you would have to lose your stubbornness.
