Neymar Goal Pushes Barcelona Past Manchester United in 2017 ICC Match

Rob GoldbergJul 26, 2017

In a battle of two of the most popular clubs in the world, Barcelona outlasted Manchester United for a 1-0 win Wednesday in the International Champions Cup.

While it was an open match with back-and-forth play, one Neymar goal in the first half made the difference.

Barcelona now have two wins in as many ICC matches, while Manchester United close their run with two wins and a loss against some of the top clubs in Europe.

While the match was just a friendly, the biggest names were in action in the first half, as Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar all started up front for Barca, while Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku led the way for Manchester United.

However, the goalkeepers were up to the task, with Jasper Cillessen especially doing a good job for the La Liga side and making five saves.

The only goal came when the Manchester United defense made a mistake in the 31st minute.

Daley Blind lost control of the ball, and then Antonio Valencia lost his balance, which led to a scramble right in front of David De Gea. Sport described the rest of the action leading to Neymar's goal:

ESPN FC captured the Brazilian's celebration:

It wasn't a pretty play overall, but it was a nice finish to give Barcelona the 1-0 advantage. It was also Neymar's third goal of the tournament to lead all players.

Bleacher Report Football celebrated the performance after the match:

This was the only scoring of the first half, but there were several opportunities from both sides, with a combined 10 shots on goal by intermission.

Colin Udoh of ESPN described the style of play:

Both sides went through mass substitutions in the second half of the friendly, but the score remained the same.

Pogba—who played the full 90 minutes for United along with Lukaku and Marcus Rashford—created several good looks on his own to showcase his individual talent. Unfortunately, none of his shots or setups turned into goals in what ended up as a clean sheet for Barcelona.

Rashford had one last chance at the net in the 94th minute but kicked it over the bar to seal the loss.

Barcelona will now prepare for the latest version of El Clasico, the first on North American soil. The squad will face Real Madrid as part of the ICC Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Manchester United have completed their run in this tournament but will continue their preseason tour in Norway Sunday against Valerenga. The Red Devils will then close their 2017 tour with a matchup against Sampdoria in Ireland.
