Liverpool Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Naby Keita and Philippe Coutinho

Matt JonesJul 22, 2017

Liverpool are reportedly ready to make a final £75 million offer to RB Leipzig for star midfielder Naby Keita.

According to Miguel Delaney of The Independent, the Reds are ready to offer £45 million of that amount up front. As noted in the report, the Merseyside giants have already seen two offers turned away worth £57.3 million and £66 million.

Per Delaney, the Bundesliga side have made it clear Keita is not for sale at this point. "German sources close to the negotiations feel it has become almost a matter of principle to keep Keita, and have been steadfast in their attitude, but a bid of that size could prove extremely persuasive," he continued.

The kind of money the Reds have offered is indicative of how highly rated Keita is. Here’s a look at some of his best moments from a superb 2016-17 season:

While he’s adept at bursting forward and making an impression in the final third, as noted by WhoScored.com, Keita also does his fair share of defensive work:

Liverpool were strong in the middle of the park last season, but landing Keita would give the team another edge.

The Guinean international has so many strings to his bow, and the combative nature in which he plays is a tremendous fit for the Premier League. Keita is keen on making the switch to Anfield, too, as Delaney relayed in his piece.

Even so, should the Bundesliga giants turn down this latest lucrative bid, Liverpool will surely have to face up to the prospect of looking elsewhere to strengthen their options in the middle third of the field.

Philippe Coutinho Not for Sale

According to Chris Bascombe of the Daily Telegraph, Liverpool will not put a valuation on Philippe Coutinho this summer amid links to Barcelona.

As noted in the report, the La Liga side have had an offer of £72 million rejected already for the Brazilian and are said to have a serious interest in the 25-year-old. However, Bascombe notes the Liverpool board "will not put a price on Coutinho’s signature this summer."

"Liverpool know the issue is sure to be revisited in the short and long term, but this summer their position is unambiguous," the piece continued. "There is too much at stake as Klopp prepares for a Champions League campaign and aims to meet the expectation of not only consolidating their top-four status but challenge those above."

Per Bascombe, manager Jurgen Klopp has also insisted Coutinho is "not for sale" at this point. However, Ed Aarons of the Guardian has suggested Barcelona will come again for the playmaker:

While an extraordinary amount of money is likely to be on the table, losing Coutinho would be a huge blow for the Reds on the cusp of the new season.

The Brazilian is the man who makes the team tick in the final third. His positioning and intelligent utilisation of the ball make him so difficult to pin down, while the Brazil international is also a huge threat when shooting from distance. It’s no surprise the Reds turned down such a massive amount.

And even if the player were to make it clear he fancied a move to the Camp Nou, Coutinho’s long-term contract at Anfield means the club can resist any offers.
