Arsenal Transfer News: Mohamed Elneny Rumours, Guardiola Talks Alexis Sanchez

Tom SunderlandJul 19, 2017

Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny has reportedly turned down a £10 million move to Leicester City. Meanwhile, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has quietened talk of a move for Gunners star and reported target Alexis Sanchez.

The Sun's Toby Gannon reported Leicester had a £10 million offer for midfielder Elneny accepted, only for the player to spurn their advances in favour of a stay at the Emirates.

According to the report, Elneny has settled in north London and wishes to remain at Arsenal despite starting just 12 times during the 2016-17 season, his first full campaign in England's top flight.

The Gunners stood to double up on their investment, who arrived from FC Basel in January 2016 for £5 million, but it seems Elneny may take some convincing to end his Arsenal journey this summer.

Football Radars recently posted a breakdown of the Egypt international's 2016-17 season by numbers, which illustrated his passing accuracy to sit among his greatest strengths:

It's well-documented Sanchez is now in the final year of his Arsenal contract, and Charles Watts of football.london provided quotes from Guardiola after Gunners boss Arsene Wenger said the player wouldn't be sold:

“Alexis plays for Arsenal. So Arsene said that, he knows more than me. Unfortunately the market finishes August 31, it should finish at the start of the season because it’s too long, too hard.

“We have two really good strikers in Sergio (Aguero) and Gabriel (Jesus) so, in that terms, we are good, it’s not about a striker.

“The problem was last season Gabriel was out for a long time and we would like to see both of them together."

It's interesting to note that while the Citizens chief admits his squad is well-equipped in the attacking department, Guardiola leaves the Sanchez question somewhat open-ended, indicating there could be room for more.

Goal's Chris Wheatley recently provided video of the Wenger quotes in question, whereby the Frenchman outlined "a decision has been made, and we'll stick to that" when referring to Sanchez:

City have been linked as one of the major European powers in the hunt for Sanchez—who could leave the Emirates Stadium for free next summer—and they would possess the financial clout to push through a deal.

There is competition in the hunt, though, after Sky Sports News reporter Kaveh Solhekol said Ligue 1 heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain are also in the hunt:

Watts also referenced Sanchez's recent comments outlining his desire to play UEFA Champions League football next season—something he won't do at Arsenal after they failed to finish among the Premier League's top four.

Jason Burt of the Telegraph elaborated upon the PSG rumours and established that while rumours of a move for Barcelona star Neymar are debatable, the interest in Sanchez appears genuine:

Arsenal would prefer not to sell their talisman to a direct English rival, but if the club feels they don't stand a good chance of extending Sanchez's contract, cashing in this summer may be the wisest business decision.
