Warriors Rumors: Rudy Gay Target If Andre Iguodala Leaves in Free Agency
The Golden State Warriors could reportedly target forward Rudy Gay in the event Andre Iguodala leaves the defending champions in free agency.
Appearing on SportsCenter Saturday morning, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski (h/t Basketball Insiders' Ben Dowsett) said the Warriors will attempt to sign Gay should Iguodala take a more lucrative offer elsewhere.
Gay, 30, would be something of a risky addition since he's coming off a torn Achilles, but he would fit the mold of a playmaking forward who could take over for Iguodala.
Before his 2016-17 campaign was cut short, Gay averaged 18.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists while shooting 45.5 percent from the field and 37.2 percent from three.
Perhaps more important was that he proved capable of slotting in at both frontcourt spots. According to Basketball-Reference.com, Gay played 60 percent of his minutes at small forward and 38 percent at power forward.
In Golden State's position-less scheme, that kind of versatility would be key on both ends of the floor—but especially on defense, since the Warriors ask their bigs to switch pick-and-rolls frequently and guard 1-5.
